Is this 2002 Mustang GT the one for me?

OK, I saw this 2002 GT for sale near me and I guess the mid life crisis must be hitting because I took it for a test drive yesterday:). I told my wife it's a sports car or a motorcycle and since she won't ride a motorcycle this is better for her;).

The last sports car I owned was an IROC Z28 and I've never driven a Mustang but holy cow I LOVE the way that car drives. Unlike my younger days however I'm able to evaluate a purchase with my head not just emotions.

So the reason I'm here is I'd like some input on the car. As you can see by the pics the interior is rough, especially the doors where the previous owner had a high end audio system and then yanked it out. I'd have to add two speakers in each door or buy replacement door panels.

The current owner put 4:10 gears in last summer as well as an X pipe and Flowmaster mufflers (wow those X pipes are LOUD) and a Pro 5.0 shifter, BUT he didn't spend the cash to get a programmer to clear the O2 error code and fix the speedometer error.

It needs new rear rubber for sure and I'd have it gone over with a fine tooth comb by a trusted mechanic before closing the deal but the best part is the vehicle has just over 48,000 miles, so is this Mustang worth joining the club with and if so what's it worth? This may not be the one, but if it isn't after that test drive I'm on a mission now;).

how much do they want for it?
The mileage is very low, but some of the stuff done really lowers the value to me personally. The front bumper and hood would definately have to go ASAP, and I would put some stock taillights back in it. The carpet and interior are kind of dingy and worn for the mileage, and those holes in the door panels for extra speakers is kind of crappy. The fact that there's no sill plates on it makes me wonder what else has been rigged in the stereo wiring. Noone would put those holes there for a "high end" audio system, since they don't add to the imaging, only make more noise.

I'm sure the seller thinks it's worth more than I'd pay for it, but to me it looks like an abused car.
I think it could be a head turner with some TLC. It just really depends on how much you want to put into it.
Run. That car has been hacked up. Find a nice stock GT if you want to have trouble free cruising. None of the mods he did are worth that much as it is, and I agree that the damage done is severe.

You sir pointed out almost exactly what I said to him and that it's coming off the asking price to square that interior away and yeah the front bumper has gotta go (I could live with the hood), he even admitted he was going to put a Roush front end kit on it if he was keeping it.

I was hoping to hear some numbers first but he's asking $10,000, I'm thinking in the neighborhood of $8,000 if it really is mechanically sound.
there are lots of GT's out there:bigthumbsup. and i wouldnt pay over 7.5 for this one. i could live with the hood but the front bumper dosent match. i dont like the painted black moldings in the inside.

Noted, if the interior wasn't hacked it would be a sweet car. Like I said in my first post, after that test drive I WILL be a future GT owner:bigthumbsup.
yea definately find somethin else stock. you could find one a lot cheaper than that and do your own mods. i really wanted a mustang and ended up payin over 11000 for mine a year ago:happyhapp

I just bought a '02 GT about 5 days ago. I payed $9,500 for it and it looks brand new with 45k on the odometer. If I were you I would keep looking, there's a lot of nicer Mustangs out there.
I would definetely wait for a stock GT to come along this one looks in my opinion and I am sorry to say... Like crapp. When I got my 03 GT it took me like 3 months to find it but when I did I knew it was the one and I LOVED the fact that it was completely bone-stock I mean everything even down to the rims!:bigthumbsup

Pass it bro and keep looking I guarantee you'll find the right GT for you and your wife.

Are you looking for a coupe or a vert?
I wouldn't pay over $6k for that car with the interior, honestly. There's good deals out there on stock GTs right now. I picked up my '01 Bullitt that had a few small misfire issues that a few new coil packs took care are ($200 in parts, and an hour of my time) for $9k because the owner couldn't figure out why it was stumbling and was tired of dealing with it, and it looks like noone ever sat in the passenger's or rear seats. And it was 100% stock except for the air filter.

The deals are out there, especially with the economy the way it is...
Trust me if you get a stock GT you'll be much happier with it because of two things.

1) You can make your car just the way you like it so it reflects your likes. Basically personalizing your GT!:bigthumbsup

2) Dont clean up after other's modding messes and this one looks like a "modded mess."

Nice to hear them words brother!:bigthumbsup

Either one but my wife could probably be sold on the convertible that much easier;). In the meantime I'll continue soaking in the Mustang knowledge this site offers.

PS- You are required to post up pics of your GT when you get it! LOL :shigrin

Good luck and happy hunting bro!:bigthumbsup
Run a carfax make sure its legit if the price suits you take it!
That car has been beaten on, rigged, and halfassed. It could wind up being a good car for you, but the price should be low for you to consider it.
