JLT Oil Seperator.

2246 Views 21 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  hubkap
So a buddy of mine told me I'm stupid for not having an oil seperator on my engine. I'm not a huge brain when it comes to cars, so, is he right?

Should I get one?

He said they keep sludge from F'ing up your engine.

AM has a JLT for $100. Should I order it?

Thanks.

$100 is pretty stiff for such a simple thing. They’re much cheaper on ebay, or you can DIY it with parts from Home Depot.

At least you can put one on your car. Out here in Calif they’re technically not legal as it’s considered a mod to the PCV system. Which is totally bogus, it doesn’t degrade the effectiveness of that at all. But don’t tell that to the brainiacs running the state.

The JLT is a big container which is a plus, is a simple plug and play, and perfect seal thanks to the quick connects. IMO spend the money upfront for a quality product.

And yes they keep junk out of the engine, your charge motion plates in your intake manifold get really gunked up thanks to not having this handy mod from the factory

Upr vs jlt

I installed the UPR and made my own hoses and made my own bracket because the UPR can mounting bracket is short and limits the places were it can be mounted. I also reused the quick disconects from the factory. I mounted it on the back of the heat shield of my JLT CAI. With that said JLT has since has marketed the plug and play Catch Can that addressed all these issues it is low profile Pancake style body factory connectors and is suspended off the engine with no need for a bracket. If it was me I would look at the JLT for all the benifits. The UPR does everthing it was designed to do. JLT IMO produces a unit that is great for N/A and SC applications and with just a few clicks the whole unit is easy to remove and service.

Thanks guys, I'm going to order the JLT (not big one making my own stuff and I like to buy quality parts) from AM.:bigthumbsup
Yeah the JLT seems a little pricey but it's about the easiest / quickest install you have ever seen, so to me that makes it worth it.

This reminds me, I need to check mine and (probably) empty it!

I installed mine after the car already had a bunch of miles on it, now I'm wondering if the charge motion plates are all gunked up already and if that would be causing any problems? I do have a hesitation/bog when I floor it quickly and I was wondering it that might be the CM plates responding slowly due to gunk?

Clean it up.

I was surprised with the low miles I had when I replaced the CMP's
GUNKED UP. If your savy enough to remove the intake and clean it up I would say go for it. A clean Throttle Body will make your car :):)

Chris I think your making a good choice but make sure you order the one with the factory connectors I think they are a option and the cost is like $120. If I had it to all over again I would have gone with JLT Like I said Can + Time then more $$ I got what you can just get out of the box now.

+1 to what they said about the JLT. I had to have a custom setup when JPC did my new build, but at less than 18k miles everything (surprisingly) was clean as a whistle, even the 6 year old CMDP's.

What they did was put my catch can over on the passenger side since there was zero room left on the drivers side due to the Procharger and intake, then they drilled and tapped the can itself for an AN fitting and attached a K&N breather right to it. Now even at idle you can see the breather really huffing out the pressure.

But yeah, you made a good choice :bigthumbsup

(mine's a UPR can BTW).

I the the Moroso catch can which is a very nice piece. Includes quality fittings, hoses, and mounting brackets. The ebay cheapos are just that - cheap!

When I installed the CAI, I removed the TB. The thing looked like it was brand new. Nothing even for me to clean out. So I'm hoping the CMPs are good cause I'm not going to attempt taking the manifold off.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to go with the JLT and the option that T Wayne said. It's only $120 and I don't buy anything from Ebay for my car. I know there are great deals to be had, but you hear some Ebay horror stories every now and again. I'll go with American Muscle and know it'll be what is says it is and I'll have it in two days shipped free.:bigthumbsup

I thought you really didnt need a can unless you where FI? Just what I have read but I could be wrong.

You don't need this, it's more of a luxury/peace of mind item. It won't do much for you if you aren't making lots of power, but its still beneficial to some extent.

BTW, is that the Journey in your avatar pic?

Sure is! I was out there last winter and was able to get a couple shots in front of it. I was very honored.

They let you drive your car out next to it? How do I get them to let me do that?
There was a car show there. They have it every year around October.

Silver, did the Moroso come with all the hoses and parts required for installation (or at least a list of parts you would need)?

Nobody needs a catch can, unless they like troubleshooting dtc's down the road from check engine lights. Have you read the threads that start, "I have X problem and Y trouble code," and responses are to clean your throttle body and/or MAF sensor?

It doesn't matter if you are FI or not, oil particulates will mix with the air/fuel mixture and deposit themselves on the TB, MAF sensor, etc. via the evap system.

A catch can "catches" these oil particulates and allows a cleaner air / fuel mixture to enter the combustion chamber :bigthumbsup

This in turn prevents you from having to track down future trouble codes related to fouled parts.

Beat Me To It

Hub Kap U beat me to it.
Plus the deposits that can form on the valves on the CMP's.
The Catch Can is good. Listen to the man he is well informed.
We use them they work on all applications from FI to N/A.

How can I tell if the CMP's are already gunked up?

And you have to take off the intake manifold to clean them, right?

(I understand that on my 2010 they are built in to the plastic manifold, not separate like on previous years)
Removal

Remove the intake but if you are installing the CMDP plugs you can clean them up then and count on the catch can to keep them clean.
As Hub posted his were in good shape. I have seen them with deposits on them then again I helped my friend install his and they were in good shape as far being clean.
