just how much weight?

4961 Views 46 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  88gt306
just wondering if anybody has a fox gt or a lx who weighed their car before and after doing some weight reduction so i can get a rough estimate of how much weight i can drop.

My plans are; ac delete, heater delete along with the blower, 15" weld draglites, arm rest delete, rear seat delete, smog pump delete, p/s delete, already has a e-fan, already has a cut out fiberglass hood, all trunk padding removed except for the thinnest layer, racing seats, and after my suspension im removing the quad shocks.. anybody got a guess at how much weight that would remove?

also the front sway bar...
Here's and example of mines:

93' LX with a cast iron headed 460, turbo 400 trans, 9" rear end; 10pt roll cage, tubular k member, all dash wires gutted, sound deadner removed, door panels removed with just aluminum panels screwed to the door. 8 gal fuel cell with cell cover, two racing plastic seats and without me.........2915lbs. No fiberglass anywhere except for the hood.

You can get a LX down to high 2700 lbs if the right stuff is removed.

Add a tubular k-member & some aluminum heads & your total will be close to dumping 300+ lbs.

trying to remember, these are all from memory a few years ago,so may be off by a lb or 2:

front sway bar is like 20lbs...22 including the end links
a/c compressor weighs about 18

my non a/c heaterbox/blower motor/vents weighed about 35lbs

(1)15x3.5 draglite with cheapo 165/80-15 street tire- weighs about 25lbs
(1)15x8 draglite with a 26x11.5-15 Hoosier QTP- 33lbs
(for comparison, my 17x9 cobra r's with a 245/45-17 street tire weighed 58lbs each!!! IIRC)

arm rest weighs 8-10lbs

my notch rear seat weighed 22-25 lbs..pretty sure the hatch seat is much heavier

smog pump is about 5 lbs i think
power steering pump is heavy, but never weighed it..should be at least 15lbs

quadshocks themselves dont weigh that much, mounting brackets are kinda heavy..maybe 10lbs total
dogbone on the rear end is an easy un-needed 10lbs

look for small un-needed stuff
2lbs here
6lbs there..may not seem like much, but it all adds up

TW 170 heads coming very soon.. im kinda iffy on the k-member right now.. i really dont wanna drop it yet.. and i hate paying somebody to do my work for me.. isnt a tubular k-member like 40lbs lighter than stock?

It's been so long since I pated attn to that, but I think it's like 20-25 lighter, but the room you gain is awesome!

at least..even more if you switch to tubular a-arms and coil-overs

one coil spring weighs about 18 lbs(again, IIRC)
one coilover sleeve/spring probably weighs about 3-5lbs..you can easily lose almost 30lbs right there..factor in the a-arms and the k-member,and its probably a 80-90lb weight savings in total..off the front end, which is the best place to lighten up

I tried to find on here and blue oval......reg on blue oval posted and a couple people on here posted weight reductions but you pretty much summed it up.

only if you switch to a tubular a-arm..most aftermarket a-arms do not have the spring cups to re-use the stock style coil-springs,so you have no choice but to run coilovers..

they do make some tube a-arms with stock spring cups, but they're pretty expensive last i seen..probably be the same price to just get the a-arms without cups and a coilover setup, lose the weight and have full ride height adjustability at the same time

you can use a tubular k-member with stock a-arms/stock coil springs

If you wanted to, you could still remove your door panels. You could mount a switch on the outside of the panels or anywhere for that matter. Lightening a car depends on how much you are willing to take out and deal with less comforts/ options.

hmmm, youre right about that... ill look into that also. but i bet when its cold, youre suffering for a minute before the engine starts the heat up the firewall which in turn heats up the cab huh? or is yours a strictly track car?
