I recently had been doing a lot of research on exhaust, watching a lot of youtube videos etc, etc because I wanted to replace the stock mufflers which were way too quiet...

Anyway, I saw a good deal on the classifieds for a used pair of Flowmaster Force IIs, and long story short I almost didn't buy them because some of the youtube videos made them seem really tinny and ricerish sounding. However I couldn't believe how much the sound between 2 videos varied for the same exhaust and same engine.

Anyway, I eventually pulled the trigger, after talking to some of the guys about the sound, and had them installed this weekend.

What I've learned is that axlebacks in person sound absolutely nothing like most of the youtube videos out there. In this case that is a good thing. These things sound deep and rumbly at all RPMs without being crazy loud, I'm really impressed by flowmaster.

Exactly. I'm a sound guy so I know ful-well that crappy camera mics can't capture exhaust sound well. IMO the roush ABs sounded like crap online but they sound like a chorus of demons above 4k IRL!

It is very difficult to tell the quality of an exhaust through any video. That part I agree with.

Unless of course...

1) The video was recorded with a half decent mic
and
2) my 5.1 channel sound system connected to my computer with a fairly accurate sound driver also helps.

But, I'd still prefer hearing them in person.

I toyed with the thought of bringing out my recording mics and mixers to do a nice hi-def recording in my driveway :) lol
I'm sure that the 25 views it would get on youtube would be worth it!

I've always thought Roush was one of the worst sounding ones in the videos, but now I don't know what to think since they obviously can't be trusted.

Yea I think the take away from this is that you need both factors to get a somewhat accurate audio representation. If you have a crappy mic, or crappy speakers (cell phone), you aren't going to get anything close.

haha. I kind of want you to do that, then do the same recording with your cell phone and post both, just so we can see how different they sound.

Who knows. You could be surprised. My Bassani videos have garnished thousands of views, and probably quite a few sales for Bassani too. :bigthumbsup

I like the Flows but since they just got re-priced just shy of a million dollars, I'm not sure they're on my short list anymore.
I honestly didn't think they were great sounding in some of the videos I watched, but love them in person. And yea, the main reason I got them is because I found them used for pretty cheap. No way I'm paying over $500 for axlebacks.

The 'Force II' was the first mod done to my 3.7. I ordered them the day I got home from the dealership. I've been very happy with them. 1st with the stock midpipe, then with the Lethal O/R X-pipe (had to add resonators to tone it down some) and now with the BBK LT's and matching O/R X-pipe.

Op- Congrats on your exhaust upgrade. I like the sound of the flowmasters. One of the more v8-like exhausts. Z28th1s' dragstrip videos sound great.

Solid- Your videos helped my decision along with AM. I like AM's side by side comparison videos. It doesn't look like too many people around here are sporting bassanis, but I love 'em.

Yea z28th1s I can see where it would get extremely loud after adding an o/r x-pipe. I don't think I'll do any more exhaust upgrade, I don't think I would like it much louder than it is now.

Thanks blackstangBlake, I agree, it was way deeper of a tone than I was expecting, similar to the v8 sound which is awesome. :bigthumbsup

Also, despite my complaints about exhaust videos, myself and my friend who has attaks might do a couple videos comparing them.

I was actually surprised when I added the LT's. I was expecting it to be obnoxiously loud, I had kind of figured I might have to add some hi-flow cats to tame it down. It is not as loud with the LT's as it was with just the O/R X-pipe and it has a much better quality sound too!

I have to agree, I've heard catless set ups in person, and Its just not as 'refined', so-to-speak. I love the sound of the hi-flows with my LT headers. It doesn't help that they've really broken in and sound even better. I should probably put up a new video of the headers.
