Does anyone know why the K&N 63-2565 air charger kit is not street legal for California? I sent K&N two e-mails but I guess they tossed them in their bit bucket. Thanks....Dave

Let's say you don't have to smog your car for next few years and even then you can put the original pipework back for a day.. :hihi:
My kind of person.....I was thinking along those lines....LOL
In CA, it's illegal to modify your intake or exhaust system in any way unless that particular mod goes through extensive smog testing. Some CA street legal mods are available for the Mustang, but they are more expensive cuz of the testing. Actually, it's illegal to modify just about any part of your engine in CA, in any way, unless that part goes through extensive testing.
Ok you knew it had to come.. because it's California! You guys can't do anything to a car down there.
Well, I really wanted to get the WMS High Velocity with the Ram Air Box but that would definitely be a big problem to switch back to the stock intake for a smog. So I am going with the K&N 63-2565 Air Charger so it would be an easy switch back for the California smog check --- thanks VeeKoo!! Going to leave it on when the first smog check comes up in 3 years and I bet it passes --- LOL

I'd say should not do anything.. :naughty

Seriously, there has been some police activity in San Diego and Sacramento area to root out illegal mods. That is, CHP & local police has had some training on identifying illegal stuff (nitrous, off-road exhaust). Of course that has caused some people to get into trouble with legal mods too since for example exhaust is up to officer's subjective estimation if it is "too loud". :( Luckily they are mostly concentrating on rice rockets.. :hihi:

That's true, so if you drive conservitivley around cops, and don't get caught watching a race (it's illegal in San Diego), or running in a race, you'll probably be fine.
I live in Fortuna which is 100 miles south of the Oregon border with a population of around 12K so I don't believe I will have any problems. The biggest thing the CHP and local cops do around here is throw up road blocks to check all the *******'s diesel trucks to ensure they are not burning farm diesel --- sooo funny to see them all lined up with a cop going down the line dipping his stick in each of the tanks. Be surprised on how many are burning farm diesel.

I will be on the look out when I go on road trips. Later....Dave
