Good afternoon,

I'm wondering whether anyone who has recently gone from 5 speed to 6 speed transmission felt there was any "learning curve" or "get the feel" curve in making the transition?

I own a 2010 GT 5 speed and pretty much love it. I just test drove a 2013 6 speed and while the engine is clearly better the tranmission...I didn't love.

It often seemed to require "one more shift" to get to any particular speed, and those shifts seemed to be at "inconvenient" places...like you almost weren't going to need that shift but in the end you did need it.

So...is this just a matter of getting used to a different shift point? Did anyone else feel this way at first?

Thanks,

I've driven manuals all my life. 83 RX7, Fox body mustangs, Jeeps etc.. Think of the sixth gear as your "highway/gas saving" gear, everything else really feels the same. You're not gonna do much in 6th but cruise and pass with cruise control on. 3.73/4.10 gears mess with my head far more than going between a 5-speed and 6-speed. :)

One thing I don't like about the current crop of 6-speeds in the 5.0 is that 5th is 1:1 whereas 4th is 1:1 in the older 5-speed. So you have to make an extra shift to get to the same place. Maybe that is fine drag racing, but on the street it sure gets to be work.

I would always rather have had the '07-'10 Shelby GT500 6-speed, where 4th is 1:1, 5th is .8:1 and 6th is .6:1. I've also heard lots of complaints on the boards about the Getrag 6-speed in the newer models.

I row through every single gear every single time. I only use 6th if I'm at a steady 65+ unless I hit a hill. Personally I don't like lugging the engine, so I down shift to 5th whenever there is an incline so I can keep it at or above 2k RPM while going up hill.

Took me maybe a week of getting used to, but that's because I came from a 5-speed Focus. I think the power took more getting used to than the shifting. :)

Atleast you agree it's a learning curve not this I've drove manuals all my life. Every manual car, truck, semi I drove are different from each one. We get new batch order of fleet trucks all the same spec yet each one don't exactly drive the same. Yes it's learning curve I'm very use to 5th gear being O/D with open mind you learn fast

I'll take the 6 speed over the old 5 speed any day of the week. The thing I didn't like about the 5 speed was that you had to reach really far over to shift into 5th. It just didn't feel right. I'm perfectly happy with the 6 speed. It doesn't bother me at all that it can be a little stiff and clunky once in a while.

The only learning curve when changing to the newer transmission is adjusting your clutch pedal and gas pedal coordination when shifting and learning which gear is best to downshift/upshift into. It's really nothing special.

The only real learning curve for me was skipping some gears. If I'm not goofing around, and trying to stomp on it, I usually shift 1 to 3 to 5, and then 6th if needed.

The first six speed that I drove was owned by a friend of mine, who owns an Acura. He was saying that switching from the five to six for him was different. He had a five speed Honda Prelude before that. It's the same thing for these cars. Fifth gear is the top street gear most of the time for me. Sixth is used if there is a steady stretch of road that you can cruise with traffic in front of you.

That being said, your 2010 is a nice setup. I had one, and although the engine may not have as much HP, it is a well balanced car. The 4.6 is a time tested engine that is incredibly dependable, and the last five speed which you have, is the best of the run. The extra gear for me is highly overrated with this setup. Although I like the car, the transmission gearing could be tweaked to make the extra gear mean something.

I had a 5 speed for 10yrs. It was fine, though it took a bit to naturally go to 6th, I would forget and stay in 5th :yelwacko: I will typically use 6th if around 40mph and steady

Right on! I would prefer a 5 sp in my 2013 with 4th being 1:1 and 5th being the overdrive.

My biggest worry when switching from my 5 speed '95 to a '12 6 speed was reverse being in the first position. Even after 6 months I still worried I was going to accidentally be in first instead of reverse when pulling out of a parking space or my garage.

So, just out of curiosity, where do people like their final rpm's? I like them around 1750 to 1900 if traffic allows. Anything in the 2000 to 3000 range, the sound of the tranny starts telling my brain it's time to shift...lol.

YES! Absolutly!

I went from a 430 HP Roush 427R 5sp to a 2012 GT 6sp-

HUGE differance and I had to pay real close to attention to what gear I was in. I found myself hitting six instead of fourth and third was sometimes hard to find -

Now after a 1000 miles on her on I rarely need to think about it - just different - thats all-

Final RPM, like for cruising...I'll usually be around 2K but on the high side more than the low. If I'm changing speed a lot, but just in normal traffic, I'll keep it somewhere around 3K, again on the high side more than the low. If I'm pushing it on purpose, well then I'll be on the high side of 6K, but that is just during acceleration and drop down when I hit cruising speed.

Tim, with the same car I like to keep mine at 2k, any less and there is little get up and go...If I know it's flat and don't expect to have to change speed I'll upshift one but normally don't. Your style will get you closer to the EPA numbers.

Maybe that's fine for the GT500 but the way the Coyote delivers power is drastically different then then 5.4L huff'ed modular. The MT82's gear ratios work extremely well with the engine's torque curve and gives you a real kick in the pants when you put the hammer down.

I've also heard lots of complaints on the boards about the Getrag 6-speed in the newer models.
Doesn't equate to everyone who has an MT82 though and just speaks for people on boards who typically come onto forums to express concerns or disappointment. Some people have awesome luck with it and others don't (Lethal Performance has a 100% factory MT82 and shifting assembly and is routinely powershifted with close to 700RWPH). That would be the same for any machine though.
