A guy a know uses a laser to put them on but I wouldn't even try it. Painted is definitely the way to go if you want to put that kind of money into it. It costs about $1500.00 to $2000.00 to get those done properly. The guy that would have done mine if I hadn't changed my mind was removing the paint and the clear where the stripes where going and the making the stripes and put a clear over them. This way when you pass you hand on it the paint is all at an equal level and they look awsome. Vinyl has a shorter life expentesy but costs far less. Hope this helps
I have to say that I'd never attempt it myself. I put a wide matte black stripe from the hood scoop to the leading edge of the hood on my 2001 GT (similar to the 2003-04 Mach 1 hood stripe) and it was a pain in the ass!!! From a distance it looked great, but up close the bubbles were obvious. It wasn't difficult to do, but it was difficult to do well.
just my opinion, but if it were me, I'd pay to have it done.
