P0172 code

My 1998 GT 4.6L throws a P0172 code that says "system too rich (bank 1)" I can smell it burning very rich and it is running a little rough and using alot more gas than usual. I'm sure this is a common code and someone on here probably knows what the cause of this is. I was hoping whoever posted the list of codes would know what causes this one??

Thanks!

Hey 1tm315 I just did a search and pulled up these 4 threads really quick.

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/4-6l-tech/122881-1996-code-p0172-runing-rich-bank-1-a.html

Check those out and hopefully you can find some information in there! The search is the best thing on here besides the help from everyone :yup:

Good luck :bigthumbsup

#11 ·
hey sharaf, sorry I didn't get back to you right away. I looked all over and found absolutely nothing on the C2064 code. Hopefully someone in your other thread was able to help you out! Sorry again.

#13 ·
The "C" codes usually involve Air Bag codes, Anti lock brake codes, or instrument cluster codes. With everything I found on Alldata and Mitchell on Demand there doesnt appear to be a c2064 code. Are you sure that is the code you had?

Help me if you can. Wife took our 01 convertible to oil can henrys fir fluids change since we just got her at 100986 miles and no service records since 66000 according to the carfax. They put on obd cause we were experiencing a miss somewhere. Dealer said TGE plugs were just replaced and SES light came on two days after we had car. Started missing and then one day later started flashing as we were driving. OCHENRYS SAID MISSFIRE IN CYLINDER EIGHT but they didn't give any other specifics or the exact code and said tune and replace plugs. Is there anything else I should check before replacing plugs? Maybe the cop on #8? And how do I tell if its the cop or what?

#18 ·
UPDATE: I just finished pulling the no.8 cylinder COP out and the inside and bottom were soaked with oil. I thought OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!! the plug well was soaked with oil OH NO!!!!!!!! I pulled the plug agin covered with oil but did not apear to be stripped as if it were blown. I dried the well best I could, dried and cleaned up the plug switched the no. 8 plug with the no. 5 plug put it all back together and test drove it around the block. sounds great, no missfire, but the SES light still lit. pulled the 5,and 8 plugs again this time after disconnecting the NEG Batt terminal (DUHHH) then cleaned both plugs again after noticing no oil on either and reinstalled the plugs, cop's, and batt term, whalah the SES light was now off and she's purring like a kitten. one more time around neighborhood and all seems well. REALTEST wife just took her into town and we'll see if all is good for good :bigthumbsup:bigthumbsup

Hey Chawk, glad to hear you might have figured out the problem! I would keep an eye on that 8th plug though since it was covered in oil. Good luck, though, glad you figured out the problem

Yes, SCT tuners can pull codes. Don't use that as a reason to buy a tuner if you're looking. Handheld OBD II scanners can be bought anywhere from $50-250 depending on their level of information gathering capabilities.

First time poster, long time viewer! Anyways, I have a 03 Mach 1 and recently change the mid-pipe and cat back. Since I did it I expected that something would go astray. Well to my disbelief, my service engine light came on after about 30 or some miles of driving. I would suspect an exhaust leak or bad 02 sensor. I don’t have a scanner/tuner, but I did the ol' speedo dtc check and came up with a code of 4227. I’m trying to decipher this to make sense and came up with throttle body sensor low?? Usually I see post of pxxx and I see that maybe the (4) is related to an airflow issue and the (227) is the code? I’ve had mustangs over the past 8 years but only in the last year I’ve been pulling out the tools and doing it myself. Other than the light coming on, other symptoms have been horrible gas MPG and frustration. Any insight would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks

#24 ·
I would try cleaning out your MAF & then if that doesn't solve it, it may be the new mid-pipe. I turned my rear O2's off after my install because I got an O/R H and didn't use MIL Eliminators. Does your mid-pip have cats or is it O/R?

#25 ·
I have cleaned out the MAF with the approve MAF safe/cleaner. The x-pipe is catted. Will have it on the lift tomorrow and am 99% sure i either put an O2 sensor the wrong place or one is bad. I I've heard of the MIL eliminator, can the casue worse performance/MPG? Anyhoo, car runs get after I clear the code and I'm guess is running lean when the code pops up!

#26 ·
First things first, the diagnostic you did only gives codes that are relavent to the instrument cluster; it will not give you powertrain related dtc's. You need a tuner or scan tool for this.

My guess is that you need to install MIL eliminators or have the rear O2's turned off via a tune. The code you are likely getting (I don't know the actual number off the top of my head) describes the problem as catalytic convertor efficiency below threshold. In layman's terms, what that means is that the pcm thinks the cat's aren't doing their job well enough. And if you stop to think about it for a minute, it makes sense; (rhetorrical question here) how could two "high flow" cats do the same job as four restrictive ones?

#28 ·
My 2001 GT is throwing this code P0153 Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor circuit Slow Response - Bank No. 2. I have MIL Eliminators due to have an o/r x pipe but i still have the stock manifold, no headers, so does it just mean i need to reaplace the O2 sensors? If so is it the front or rear O2 sensors. I thought rear but wasnt forsure. any help?

Thanks, Branden
