There shouldn't have ever been a vin on the dash. It should be on both front inner fenders. Lift the hood and it should be on the driver's side inner fender where it bolts up to the outer fender. There should be small cut out in the outer fender exposing it. The one on the passenger side is covered by the outer fender. You have to unbolt the top of the fender and pry it up a little and peek underneath of it. I think it is elsewhere also, but try there first.

This is correct. The last place it would be is the tag on the driver's door if the tag is still there and it's the correct one for the car (door hasn't been swapped).

Dash VINs didn't happen on the Mustang until the 68 model year.

The vin is 3 places the door plate the drivers side where the fender is cut out and one on the passenger side you have to take the fender off to see.

Actually its in 4 places. Its on the driver's fender twice; once in the cutout up front and again further back to match the one on the other fender.

The dash mounted, visible VIN for ALL US cars was a federal requirement for MY 1968.

Ivy66GT, do you mean the buck tag? I have both my fenders off right now, and I only have 1 hidden vin. I know that my driver side front inner fender was replaced, but the rear inner fender is original, and there is no VIN there. There is the "hidden" VIN on the passenger side rear inner fender.

The VIN will be on the front inner fender (battery apron) not the rear inner fender back by the hood hinge. To see the one on the battery apron the top fender bolts need to be removed and the passenger fender pulled back, not visible with the fender on.

Yes, the buck tag will have the VIN too, but not all cars had buck tags originally and it's common for them to be missing too if they had them.

No, I have no buck tags.

The driver's inner fender has the VIN stamped in it in two places. One at the front where the cutout is located for easy viewing and once again further back at the same position fore-aft as the one on the passenger's inner fender. Both of the rear numbers are centered at a point roughly 14" from the rear edge of the hood. The rear ones require fender removal to see. This is a July 1966 San Jose car in case there might have been any differences in that respect.

Maybe there was, because mine is a San Jose March 1966 car.

Being the curious type, I looked at my Mar 1966 Dearborn coupe: it also has the VIN stamped on its driver's inner fender TWICE in the exact same spots at the San Jose convertible. All of the fender VINs are oriented longitudinally and for the rearmost ones at the center spot of each there is a date stamp oriented transversely. Both date codes correspond to the respective Mar and July '66 dates confirming these as original sheet metal. I knew the coupe was original, I have less history on the convertible. Counting from the rear the 2nd and 3rd numbers are between the 2nd and 3rd fender bolts on each side.

There is no VIN stamp near the battery on either car. Both cars have the VIN on the rear portion of the 2-piece inner fender.

That's odd. I still don't believe I have a VIN on the drivers side rear inner fender. I will absolutely double check tomorrow when I put my fenders back on. After almost 2 months, my car is alive and kicking. I had it running to break in the new oil and to circulate all the fluids.
