Right now, I am on my 2nd 5.0 mustang. But reliability always seems to come up with these fox bodies. My wife wants me to sell the old 5.0 and get a newer model mustang. Of course, I don't want to leave it stock (but she doesn't know that...LOL). I am looking into a 99-04 4.6L Stang. I want to get it to about 350 HP to the wheels WITHOUT a power adder. I am not familiar with these modular motors, so what can be done to the car to realistically get me to my goal? Also, are there any of you guys with 4.6s who do all their own work? I understand they are a lot harder to work on than the old 5.0s. Thanks for ya'lls input. :thumbsup

well as soon as you pick a 4.6 that you would like i could help you out... and since you dont want a power adder Cobra is out of the question and saleen... but for any 4.6L you can do the usual bolt ons TB, cold air charger, exhaust, ignition, dynotune, MAF sensor, underdrive pulley system, if you want you could even do cams :walksmile and that should get you up there but make sure u get the dynotune towards the end and that way you fuel/air mixtures are good to go and doing those add ons are pretty easy i like working on my 4.6 everything is pretty easy for the most part.. there is a lot of room to work beleive it or not.. and im a big guy

If you want 350 HP out of a 2 valve 4.6, be prepared to spend some $$$. With the mods VP listed you might hit about 270-280 with a little luck. Throw some long tubes, ported heads and intake on top of that and you will still fall short. If 350 is your goal, a power adder is your best choice, as you will most likely spend more going the N/A route then you would on a supercharger to hit that level. I wanted to do the same thing, but why not bolt on the supercharger and avoid tearing down the whole motor, and surpass my goal in the process. Just my opinion though! Good luck!

Deffinatley look into getting a cobra. Its gonna be alot easier to get to 350 to the wheels with a cobra than a GT will. You could pick up a pre 99 cobra for less than 15k. I think they dyno close to 280+ to the wheels stock. The 99-04 GTs are closer to 220 to the wheels. Full bolt ons on the gt will not be above 300 to the wheels wtihout a cam.

If you wanna spend a little more money you caould pick up a 03-04 Mach1. Its got the 24 valve and its an all around better car than the GT. Ive heard they can dyno 300 to the wheels stock. Theyll run you 20-25k.

mach1s are same motor as a cobra just not forged and supercharged, same its a 32V motor.

id go with a mach1 to start off.. if you wana stay N/A or a 99-01 cobra.

I found this car... What do you think?http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=198871292&dealer_id=57649793&car_year=2001&search_type=used&make=FORD&transmission=&distance=100&model=MUST&sponsorModel=&address=78109&make2=sel_one&only_price=1&certified=&advanced=y&max_mileage=&max_price=20000&bkms=1145302534549&min_price=1&end_year=2004&color=&start_year=1999&drive=&isp=y&engine=8+Cylinder&doors=&fuel=&lang=en&cardist=90

Anybody know how to find a car's loan value? I've searched the net but all I get is pop ups and junk.

You can get a 4.6 to 350 rwhp without a power adder but its difficult. Ported heads, the right cams, a Reichard intake, and every bolt-on available will get you right at 350. This is a fairly extreme setup, however, and you can substitute a milder intake and cams to gain some driveability but you will lose a little top end power.

You might look at kellybluebook.com to get a general idea of the book value. I don't know if this will tell you the loan value, but it should at least give you an idea. Hope this helps. Of course, they are probably only going to list the value of the car at stock. I don't know if there is anywhere to find out what a car is worth with aftermarket upgrades/changes or how that effects a bank's willingness to give a loan.

Whoops, I ment to say 32 vavle. Brain fart.

WITELITENIN: That cars alredy supercharged. So id say its alredy at 350+ to the wheels.

350 RWHP on an NA 2V... That's hard to do without some major cash. Get a power adder with some supporting mods. You will be happier and you will get there a lot quicker.

Do the 4.6s have forged internals? I just worry about getting a supercharger and breaking something........

I have found a couple of stangs that were supercharged that I liked, one mentioned in this thread. I think I am going to have to sell my 5.0 first, or I won't be able to finance a highly modified car cuz the loan value is too low (tried to get financing for the car mentioned above but the loan value was 6000 bucks less than price). If I traded the 5.0 at a dealer it wouldn't be a problem. But most of the 4.6s I see that are modified are for sale by private seller.

No, they don't have forged internals... I wish they did. I would have cranked up the boost even more if they did. They have powdered metal rods with hyperutectic pistons. Not the best combination. I would just make sure that if you ran a power adder on the stock bottom end that you try not to exceed more then about 390 to 400 rwhp... Once you get there, you are about at the limit of the stock internals for lasting a good amount of time. If you go supercharged, don't put too much advance into the car. Mine had 17* of timing at 6000 RPM's on 91 octane. That was too much. I should have run 15* @6000... But oh well you live and learn right?

350 WHP with out a SC/nitrous/turbo will be damn hard and cost a lot. But I guess every one mods differenetly. You will probably need:

Catback
X/H pipe
tuner/programer
TB/plenum combo
stage 2 cams
ported heads
UDP's
headers
electric water pump

Basically, every bolt on created for the 4.6, plus more :thumbsup. Happy modding.
