Hey, i just bought an overhauled 302 that had been sitting around. I installed it and it doesnt turn on because i think the lifters are not discharged due to not having oil for a while. The rockers are loose so the valvez are not opening properly. Does any one know wat i can do to get it running.? Do i have to take the lifters out and soak them in oil? Do i get longer push rods? Can i push start it? Do these rockers have to be adjusted. ? The guy i bought it from said it had a roller 3.25 cam ans solid roller.lifters.. Can i add starting fluid???

:kooky: Welcome to AFM. :yup: Not sure about your install but do your have spark or fuel? Your rockers being loose would not keep the engine from starting unless someone backed them off till they were not opening any of them valves. Another thing is that you say your have solid lifters, they do not pump up, only the hydraulic ones do.

as far as i know all ford heads you run them down till they are tight they are not like chevys where you have to adjust them while its running , but not to tight if they are loose thats what i would do and then try starting it , do you have carbed or efi engine?

I have never personally dealt with solid lifters but I am sure they are suppose to have a certain amount of tension on them.
I would say it is highly likely that it is a spark or fuel issue.

Well you got a few problems since you bought someone else's mess.

What cam is in there....hydraulic roller or solid?

Solid lifter are not the same as roller lifters.

You also need to check pushrod lengths

it could also be solid roller. in that case the rocker arms will be loose on the ones that are down. this sounds like a real mess! you need to talk to the guy you got it from and get more info. solid roller? solid flat tappet? hydraulic roller? adjustable rocker arms? ect, ect..... guys solid roller cams and lifers have been around for more than 40 years. way longer than hydraulic.
