Losing oil: Burning or maybe leaking?

1585 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  engineer76
I have a 2000 GT and the oil just seems to dissapear... After it is full, 4-5 months later there is none and the oil guage goes crazy going back and forth. So I chk it and sure enough none. The oil leak is not noticeable, no spots, clear exhaust. What could it be? Also, the Service engine light is on for EVAP I believe. What is that?

I use that new mobile 1 1 yr oil and change every 6 months, and it only has mufflers and thats it.
any smoke? Maybe piston rings....but I'm no expert...

also, have you checked what the coolant in the radiator looks like?

I would probably do a complete tear down and rebuild with those symptoms...
The Evap code you're getting is for the evaporative emissions system. There could be a number of causes for that one, ranging from the gas cap not being on properly to a leak on the evaporative emissions cannister. Right now, that's the worst of your problems. The biggest problem I see is you aren't checking your oil regularly and letting the oil pressure gauge tell you when you need oil. BAD IDEA!!! You know your car is using oil, so check it once a week or so, do it when you fill up the gas. Don't let the needles tell you when you're low on oil or coolant. The next time you may not get a warning and you spin a bearing or overheat. As for where the oil is going, there's really no telling. If it's not landing on the ground, then it must be going out the tailpipes. You give a 4-5 month time frame, small puffs of oil smoke could easily explain that and never go noticed by you in a mirror. My advice is to get a compression test done and then a compression leak down test. Once you get those results done I'm betting you need to rebuild the engine.

If there isn't a visible leak, then you have to be burning it. Either the rings are shot or the valve stem seals are bad. You are playing with fire by letting your oil get that low. 4.6's have oiling issues as it is. The fact that you're oil changes are atleast six months apart, it's quite apparent that your poor maintenance habits have caused this oil issue. How many miles are you putting on the car between oil changes, anyways?
How the hell do you go 4-5 months without checking your OIL !
I hope you have DEEP pockets. You should change your oil every 3 thousands miles, not 4-6 months

Mine only gets changed about every 5.5 months. I use synthetic as well but between those months i prolly put maybe 2500 miles on it if that.

I hope for you that you did not damage the rod-bearings or somehing else in your motor. If the gauge goes crazy it means that your oil pump is sucking up air, and you don't have sufficient oil pressure any more!

Does your car use more than 1 quart per 1000 miles? If yes, it sounds to me like a bad, stuck oil ring which does not scrape the oil off from the cylinder walls any more.
Do a professional internal engine cleaning:
- Top end cleaner,
- Take oil pan down and remove the sludge
- oil system flush http://www.bgprod.com/products/engineoil.html
(Quick Clean. ATF works to, but only to a certain extent)
- Don't forget the before and after compression test.

Then pour new, good oil (I use Mobil 1, 5W-30) into the motor and check the oil consumption, on a level surface. If your motor uses more than a quart per 1000 Miles you have a problem.

If that did not help, your next step would be to use all kinds of other products.
(engine restore, oil aditives, etc. -> I am not really a big fan of those)
If that does not help you have a couple of options:
- live with what you've got
- or get a new motor
- repair the one you have
- get a used one from a J.Y.
