I have my daughters 1990 Mustang GT-5.0 that we bought her new when she was a Jr. in high school, no mod's, just as it came from the factory. 156,000 miles. The oil pressure gage that normally stays at the midway point has dropped to the low pressure mark. Question is, how can I check the oil pressure to make sure the gage is not faulty? I think I read somewhere there is an oil sensor unit on the car, should I replace this? I have done all the minor work on this car myself ( oil pan gasket, clutch assembly, rear main seal, etc.), with the help of forum's like this, maybe someone can help me again.
Thanks

You can replace the sender on the side of the block. But with those miles I would just change the oil reg and use a little thicker like 10w40. Sounds like the main bearings are wearing out and will be time for a rebuild in the near future.

The oil pressure sending unit is right near your oil filter. There should be a six sided bar that its attached into your block with. You can unscrew it using an adjustable wrench. I would take the bar out and make sure there's no junk in it. Same way for the unit itself, just unscrew it and look for gunk and clean up the connection to the single pigtail wire on top of it and make sure its making a good connection. If pressure on the gauge doesn't go back to normal I'd replace the sending unit and see what happens - start with the little cheap stuff first :bigthumbsup

Here's a link to an OE replacement for under 20 bucks and attached is a picture of where you can find the unit.

Good luck!

Yea I would replace the sending unit first. My needle started jumping around and showing low pressure, replaced the sensor and its been great ever since. Running the 10w40 is a good idea especially on an older engine.
