I currently have the rubber coated factory rims on my 89 LX. I would like to change them out for the aluminum factory rims from a 90 LX (the ones with the holes going around the circumference). I know that the tire size is slightly different, but is there anything else that would prevent me from simply changing from one to another (number of lugs, tire too wide, etc)?

Phone dials, that's a good one
We called them that years ago. I guess it was a popular slang term since I have read it in mags. Most of the youngsters buying these fox bodies today are so cell phoned that they probably have to get a history book to understand the term.:gringreen You should be able to get them cheap unless the local scrap merchants in your area have scrapped them. I used to always have a set with drag tires on them.

The nearby junkyard was offering $150 for the set, and they had some decent tires on them which I thought was worth it. I really wasn't looking for them at the moment, but I figured I would eventually. So I will probably pick them up this week if they are still there.

I own an 89 lx 2.3 5spd which came with turbine wheels,i swapped them out for a set of silver '93 cobra wheels with 235's up front and 255's on the rears. I'm eventually working my way up to 315's on the rears with some 'Pony R wheels. So much you can do with these 4 bangers.

One thing I did notice was that the tire sizes are different, so I am guessing that this is going to affect my speedometer reading. The old ones were 195 75R14 and the new ones are 215 60R15.

The new ones will be less than .5 inches shorter so I dont think it will mess up your speedo much. Maybe 1 or 2 mph. I had the ugly rubber rims too. I opted for the pony 5 star rims with the 16" tires. But if the 10 holes had been available cheap with tires I probably would have gone for them too. Mine rub on the inner k frame when turned fully in one direction. I think this is the fault of the 4 cylinder spindles. I dont think the 10 holes have that problem.

The 5-star rims would have certainly been my first choice if money wasn't a factor. The other reason I like the phone dials is that they are easier to clean. The brake dust is a real pain to clean out of the grooved on the rubber coated rims.

Any pointers on how to shine them up real nice?

I dont know what you can do to shine them up. I think they have a clear coat on them but Im not sure. As far as brake dust, Ive switched all my cars to ceramic pads and never have any problems with brake dust any more. I just washed my rims today for the first time in a month and there was hardly a trace of any dust.

If you're careful you can pick up some wheel acid. Wear latex gloves and have a hose handy ... don't let the acid sit but for a few seconds. But first wet the wheels down so you don't ruin the wheel. Down the road if you like .. here's a website selling all year Mustang wheels starting from 1985 .. I looked at that site. Surprisingly, the 5 point rims for the 91-93 GT's are cheaper that the 10 hole rims. If that's the case, I would probably get those instead when the time comes.

I used some rubbing compound to clean them. It shined them up nicely, not perfect but good enough to remove the oxidation. I'll look into the wheel acid the next time I need to clean them up.
