ive got an 87 gt its efi 5.0 and i dont know how to tell if my car still has speed density or if its got MAF.
maf or speed density how to tell?

I believe it is Speed density
MAF did not come until 89.
I think you can tell by the following.
Its been a while since I looked at mine so I an going off of memory.
Look on the Air inlet hose coming off of the air filer box
the MAF cars will have a black box mounted to the top side of the hose for the MAF sensor.

im not sure if mine is because the stock setup was modified, it looks like a two hoses were spliced together to be honest i couldnt explain it without a picture reference but, i recently put in a cold air intake so the box is gone altogether, i didnt see a black box as was described, is that all i need to upgrade? the other thing is is there anything really wrong with keeping speed density when upgrading engine parts?

mfbris is correct. I got an 1988 speed density and a 1990 mass air.
On my 1988 it doesnt have a sensor that I see on the inlet tube, just a plastic pipe from intake to air box.
On the 1990 it has two separate hoses and in between the two hoses is the mass air module. It has a connector on the top that faces the passenger fender.
if your car is stock it is speed density. I think 1986-1988 Is speed density. The only exception to the rule is 1988, where the california models are mass air.
If your car is not stock but has mass air...you should notice where the wires have been spliced in, and they do make a cable that attaches to the speed density connector to convert to mass air.

here is the problem with speed density...it has preset items in it.
example at this rpm shoot this much gas, at this rpm shoot this much more or less gas.
I've heard if you put a bigger cam (as this messes with vacuum pressure) which is what I hear speed density runs off of) then it has problems. You should be able to get away with quite a few regular power adders...but when you get to cams/bigger injectors, and cylinder heads (so I have heard) is where you will run into problems. This is what I have heard, I can't really say because my speed density unit is bone stock. Have also heard with some upgrades you may need to reflash the computer or the car will never run right.
The difference between Mass air is that it calculates variable fuel calculations based off of other readings on the computer.

yup i know that for every mod the chip should be tuned if i were to keep sd but mass air shouldnt be too hard to swap over to sounds like a quick fix, i dont need to mess with computers or anything? it should just spice in and do what it should?

To convert you need a new computer your computer has no hookup for MAF, and wouldnt know what to do with the info. Computer from 89-93 will be it. The MAF is the between the air box and the throttle body, as far as 2 hoses and it being between them I dont know what thats all about, If you added a CAI and didnt notice a MAF you dont have one. Do a search on MAF conversion and look for a kit or instructions. MAF is a big step up from SD. It makes calculations based on air temp and how much air is flowing through the sensor and gives you a better air fuel mix.

2 hoses meaning the one coming from the airbox then the maf is inserted in that hose, and the other hose going to the intake...That is two hoses or am I mistaken?

Well ya its technically two hoses but its one continues line, I see what you meant now but the way you worded it was a little foggy to some of us.
