Manual to Auto Transmission

1243 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  1stPny
I just got a 2000 GT Vert and I think that it was changed from a 5-speed to an Auto...the VIN# classifies it as a manual transmission, but it is an auto.

I was wondering if it could be changed back to a 5-speed, and if so, about how much would it cost?

Thank. Lisa

That's interesting, the first time i've ever heard of someone swapping a street driven GT to an auto. The cost depends a lot on where you find parts and if you can do the work yourself. You'll need the transmission, clutch, pressure plate, pedal assembly and computer as well as a few other odds and ends. You may be able to find the transmission and bellhousing in a junkyard, along with the pedal assembly. The clutch really should be bought new though.

Unfortunatly, I won't be able to do the work myself...:sosad: Would love to learn though! Would it be ok to buy everything except the clutch used?

Thanks. Lisa
That should be fine, just make sure the flywheel gets a good inspection for burn marks, cracks and other surface defects before it's installed.
I've seen several posts on the same subject. It seems like you're not the only one. Some want to go from auto to manual. Some want to go from manual to auto. Finding someone that wants to trade with you would be the best solution. The other person will have all the parts you need, including the computer.

You should start a thread in a local or regional Mustang message board and wait for someone to reply.
STAY AUTO. LOl
i am one of the ones that went from 5spd to manual.

You should have no problem doing the install yourself. hardest part would be THE PEDAL ASSEMBLY.
Other than that. Very easy if you have all the parts and about a good weekend on your hands. Can actually be done is less than 8 hours.

clutch kit, flywheel, throwout bearing is what you would need to buy NEW!
Tranny, bellhousing, (driveshaft i believe) (block plate)
Computer
pedal assembly
shifter bezel
shifter (might as well get a short throw)
Maybe a transmission crossmember (some need it some dont)
new flywheel bolts (auto flexplate bolts will not work)
If your tranny cooling lines go to the radiator than CAP THEM OFF as well.
I believe some harnes's as well. replaces the auto ones from the connector to the tranny. no more than 1 foot long.
