I have a 64-1/2 convertible with the original single chamber MC and power assist. There are kits available to convert to a dual chamber but they are different for manual or auto transmission. What is the difference? I have converted to an AOD. Does that make a difference?

We have an ongoing joke at the shop having to buy generic parts as mundane as wiper blades, when the counter guys asks "manual or automatic". Apparently the computer systems used have to have answers like that before they will pop out a part number.

Plug in one and get the part number. If you're curious, try it again with the other option. It will probably give you the same part number.

A popular conversion in the 70's was to purchase the MC for a 1974 maverick...you get your choice of drum/drum, disc/drum, manual or power.......all oem parts, plentifull and a direct fit at a heck of a lot less $.

Yadkin- There is a $50 price difference between the two kits.

Beechkid- Will the Maverick MC bolt up to the Mustang power unit or do I need the Maverick part?

I am 90% sure the answer is yes! The Maverick & Mustang parts were the same spec.

I read that the 74 Maverick used the same M/C, also. The ad that you saw must have been a misprint, because the transmission shouldn't make any difference.

The difference would be if you were using power assisted brakes or manual. The push rod from the M/C is a totally different design between the two systems. The M/C for disc brakes is different from the drum system, also.

The 64 1/2 uses a brake pressure activated stop light switch, the Maverick uses a pedal activated switch, so be aware of this. If you buy a kit, there should be some kind of provision for this difference.

Yes , there is a difference:
The A/t has a larger diameter Vacuum chamber vs the Manual Trans.

The manual trans smaller vacuum booster is so the clutch mechanism on this type requires more room than the Auto trans.

And of course the brake pedal is much wider on auto trans vs manual trans. but this has no effect on the situation.

And the dual m/c is longer than the single master cylinder, so as to have room from the shock tower, a pancake type vacuum canister is used.

Hope this helps.
