Metal or Rocks in the RWD

okay so I went by a auto shop and they told me there was metal in the RWD. It sounds really bad when your driving down the road from the back of the car like somethings dry back there?!? Can anyone tell me what that means. He said it sounds like rocks in the back, I dunno what that means. 2000 Mustang 3.8L 5-Speed 136,000.

rwd would only mean rear wheel drive, cant understand why they would choose that group of letters to inform you your cars rear end was dry and full of metal, if that is what they meant then your in need of a rear end rebuild. did they quote you for the work? did you pay for that half assed diagnosis? hope not.

yeah seems like they are trying to take advantage of you for not knowing. RWD can mean any number of things. If your gears are shreded then .... ouch. More information on the problem would help.
check your axle bearings
Did the shop remove the rear end cover and look at it?
this really begs to all to always get any estimate in writing.
they quoted me $1500.00, I did not pay them anything for them to tell me that if you live in the DFW, Texas area there called Mid-Cities Mustang you heard of them? and they just drove it down the rode came back and said it "sounds" like there is rocks in rear end. They said they would have to clean out the gears and replace some bearings. I really think its the bearings the car has 136K miles so most likely there worn out. If I wanted to replace them what is the specific part name? Thank you so much for all your Advice!
well could be just the bearings, be real hard to tell what kind of condition the gears are in without taking off the diff cover. but as you wanted to know specifcally., youd need a set of carrier bearings a pinion bearing and seal, possibly axle bearings and seals. maybe a ring and pinion gear, maybe a even spider gears. if it went that far id be thinking time to get a posi/tlock and maybe some 3.73 gears. 1500 seems like alot for just bearings. i have a whole new rear end , gears and posi with new bearings, parts and labor about $700.
there probubly quoting everything in the rear end that they can, at full price. i think id get a few more quotes , think about buying the parts online and save a few bucks, expect to only pay $3-400 for labor.

they are so trying to rip your ass off, go to a bigger city or somthing.
i dont mean this in a bad way ewells but maybe you misunderstood him he is over in dallas fort worth texas... which is in the top 10 largest citys in america. as for the rear end i would just try as many shops as you can and get quotes... and don't be afriad of those lil places... sometimes they will give you the best deal.
It could be anything from a bad spider gear to one of your ring gears ahave chipped off. There are not that many moving parts in the rear end. Yes, and $1,500 is a big screwing.......
okay yeah i'll look around for sure, you think if I just bought a used rear end from someone and let some shop put it on be cheaper?
definatly. though you might as well go ahead with a posi if you can. at around 200 give or take a ford tlock and gears off ebay would be good, might need to replace the friction disks in an older one but still could be done fairly cheap. as i posted earlier i got mine done and used new parts for less than half what that place quoted you.
