Mustang 5.0 or Camaro SS

Good Afternoon to all.

I know you guys have probably heard this a million times before (GM vs FORD), but i currently own a 08 Dodge Charger, and i want to get something abit faster and lets just say.. NOT as heavy. i do have a newborn.. so i will have a rear facing seat for the first few months.. my wife is very pettite so i know she wont mind the tight fit...

as far as performance goes i know the new stang is hands down the best thing under $40-50k

as everything goes, theres always a pro and a con.

i love everything about the new 5.0's.. BUT i hate the fact there is no SUNROOF! on the other hand the camaro is a real head turner but its very small on the inside for such a big car exterior wise.

what i want to know is, how many of you guys have or have had rear facing seats in your 2010-12 stangs. hows the fit? any pics? is it safe?

and as far as performance... MOD for MOD... realistically speaking.. how do they match up? what can i expect from a tune, cai, and exhaust on a 1/4 run? i want a low 12, high-mid 11 daily driver car, without having to put thousands of dollars towards it.

BTW- i will post this on the camaro5 forum as well. because i know i am going to get Mustang favored posts here. and camaro favored posts over there, i just want to have a good overview of it on both ends.

OH! any pics of a race red, white, black or grabber blue on black wheels. will be gladly appreciated... esp. RTR's/TSW or F14's :)

I was facing the same dilemma.....I drove both and it was 5.0 hands down for me. The lack of a sunroof didn't bother me, had one in my TL and I hardly used it. The Camaro feels a lot bigger and is hard to see out of. The interior in the Mustang is a lot nicer also.
As far as performance, the 5.0 will run mid to low 12s with only drag tires. Guys are getting into the 11s with intake, tune and exhaust work.

As far as baby seats go. I have a 19 month old and I use a car seat. Now I never put it backwards but it does fit well forwards. I use the latch systems but you do have to move the passenger seat up a bit. Just use the latch system and a nice car seat and I'm sure it's safe.

Track results depend on your driving skills. You can run mid to high 12's on a stock car but may take a bunch of runs, that is if your a rookie. Add on a tune and o/r h or x pipe and some nice tires and low 12's or high 11's should be a piece of cake.

Your gonna have to spend thousands to get into the 11's IMO weather its a ford or Chevy. Mods will respond better on the 5ohh due to the high compression. :bigthumbsup

Only way to find out is to test drive both. There is no sunroof, but there's a glass roof. Love the glass roof but it's 2grand.
The Mustang is a few hundred pounds lighter than the Camaro, so better power-to-weight ratio. The Mustang is also 4V per cylinder. which should respond better to modding if you plan on going down that route in the future. These are the reasons why I went with the 5.0.

You can't go wrong with either one. Both are similar in price, although, dealers in my area are currently offering $7k - $8k in rebates on Mustangs right now. So you can get a very good deal.

Right now, I have seen more SS Camaros than 5.0 Mustangs...almost 2:1. The 5.0 turns just as many heads...especially with the kids.

hm, thanks guys. i am a rookie. i dont even know how to drive stick yet. my charger is a 4spd auto :bigthumbsup BUT! i will learn. now what do you guys suggest Auto or Manny? lol and is americanmuscle the best site to get aftermarket parts?
i want to have a current gen car.. like the current mustangs are updating again next year... (2013 models) and then 2015 for its anniversity. i dont wanna be OUTDATED! and the camaro isnt rumored for an update till 2016... so thats a factor as well.

Oh man, I would seriously think about buying a sub $1000 beater to learn how to drive a manual on before buying either car. If you smoke a clutch it'll cost you at least that, and if you over rev the motor because you grabbed second instead of fourth you'll be paying a lot more..........
American Muscle is great, and since youo're in Maryland you'll get your stuff in a day or two.

I would by an automatic vs. a manual if you are getting a new 5.0.
What do you like driving more? M or A? I like the manual myself but it depends on what YOU want.

American Muscle is a great site but sometimes someone else has a better price. Check blue oval industries, lethal performance, evolution performance, southern car parts, etc etc etc.
It's going to take you a long time to learn how to drive a manual PROPERLY and 400 some horse probably isn't the best learning tool for you. In my humble opinion, I think you should get an auto. I can only assume your wife doesn't drive a stick either, this way she'll be able to enjoy the car too.

As a matter of fact, since you don't drive a stick, I guarantee the auto will be faster for you even if you do manage to learn the stick somewhat. A lot of drag racers will choose an auto over a manual just for consistency.

Just my opinion and over 30 years of driving fast cars.

i would only get an auto for 2013, due to the fact i would want the brembo brakes and wheels :(

VERY TRUE. but like i stated i would wait until the 2013 model to get the auto, so i can get the brembo pack with it.

Why aren't you interested in the Challenger?

I'm not going to talk down about the Camaro just because it's "not a Mustang." I test drove all three (+ Challenger) and there is absolutely no comparison from a performance standpoint. And that's proven out on the dragstrip, with modded Camaros and Challenger SRT8s lucky to get into the high 12s with a good driver. My stock Brembo GT ran 7.9 in the eighth which should be around a 12.3 or so.

The biggest thing I didn't like about the Camaro and Challenger is that they feel very big. But somehow with the low roofs and high beltline, they have managed to make them feel claustrophobic.

If you don't know how to drive a stick, then get the auto. These cars are forgiving to a point, but can be dangerous if you're having to deliberately think about the things you need to do to keep your car under control. Four-hundred horsepower can get away from you quick.

All three are pretty good cars, but I think some people have unrealistic expectations about them. They want them to be crazy fast, with no noises except the aftermarket exhaust they put on, and built with the quality and precision of a high-end luxury car, all for half the price of the cars that actually deliver those things. If that's what you demand, then you need to be looking at BMWs and Jaguars.

I just want to add that if you are going to be driving your newborn around often, then you might want to consider getting another charger. I don't know about the camaro, but the backseat access for the mustang is very inconvenient.
There's a fun factor involved with owning a manual, but given how good techonology is nowadays, autos are just as quick if not quicker. If you do not know how to drive a manual, I would recommend buying an auto.

i agree with everything, and as far as the mopar... im in a mopar car club... biggest in our area.. but our 2 fastest cars run low 10's (300 srt8) and a mid 11 (charger rt) but they have well over $20k worth of mods.. i want a car i can have fun in.. but when a civic or any of those jdm pieces of crap pull up.. i can burn em with out an issue.

yeah dude, but i want a coupe...
Breeze, I was in your position not too long ago. I've been a Chevy fan my whole life from a 02 chevy truck, 05 Tahoe and a 00 SS.

So I went to the chevy dealership and drove the new SS and then went and drove a 12 5.0. I was sold, I looked at your post over at camaro5 and noticed how devote those guys are. To be honest go drive both, but I will tell you that by far the mustang is faster and you will notice that just from the drive.

Also I've seen many and I mean many members here in the 11's with just a cai, tune, and slicks (and a good driver of course). Good luck with your decision. IMHO the mustang backseat can not be worse than the camaro. Everyday I get into my car (12 5.0 w/ 3.73 6mt) I have a smile on my face and that's what I wanted most out of my car.

Good luck and even if you do get the camaro your welcome to stick around the forum! Cheers!
