as i await the arrival of my gt, i am getting pounded by my gm and mopar buddies..."just wait until i get my challenger/camaro!!".."you should have waited for the new gto body style/camaro/fire-chicken"...IT MAKES ME THIINK I JUMPED THE GUN ON MY MIDLIFE CRISIS CAR!!...i'm sure the mustang will have respectable power, but how much do i have to invest in mod's to beat a gto or a stock challenger(i know..if they build it)...like i said in previous threads, ford should have offered more options like a 350h.p. boss...its obvious we would have paid extra for it....ford will probably respond to the camaro and the challenger by boosting the h.p on the 2008 models..then our cars will be devalued as the weaker early efforts...you can put all the mods on you want , but that just lowers your resale..stock h.p. holds value...I JUST HOPE I DON'T WISH I WAITED ...

The Camaro or Challenger are both 2+ years away from being on the road so buy the Mustang now and enjoy driving the best looking car on the streets...then if/when either of those cars come out take them for a test drive and decide which you like more. Trade in if you like one of them more...but I'm thinking both those cars are going to be 8-10K+ more than a Mustang so take that into consideration.

You know, this will never end, coulda woulda shoulda. Why do you always have to be faster? Personally I don't buy cars because they are faster than the competition. Ford took a gamble on this one and won, GM, Chrysler saw the sucess and are jumping in, so what. What are you going to do if you bought a 350 Boss Supercharged 900 HP this year and GM came up with a 1000 HP Camero in a couple years? wish you would have waited?

As I posted in another thread: all the guys in these forums getting all hot and bothered and wanting to trade their Mustangs in the minute the Camaro and Challenger go on sale make me want to laugh. I don't think they realise just what king of masterful job Ford did designing a car that has the power, the handling, the looks, and the build quality of the new Mustang at that selling price. This doesn't happen every day. Just because a concept car has more HP doesn't mean it's going to be a better car. The other manufacturers have their work cut out for them if they are going to arrive with a final product that is as good as the Mustang and sells for the same price.

I totally agree with you about the Mustang and I think I didn't do a good job starting this thread. I was a absolute car nut back in the 60s and could tell you who made what and with what options, etc. Also had a couple of pretty fast ones myself. Over the years all cars started to be the same to me other than cost and creature features. Watching the International Auto Show I was amazed to see the HP being produced in other cars and thought why didn't Ford put more HP in the Mustang. Guess I slipped back in time to the HP is everything mentality.

Want to add that the first time I saw the new Mustang was December 2005 at a dealership. I was floored by how great it looked and how it reminded me of the 60s. I could not stop talking about it to my wife and told her I had not had such excited feeling about a car since I was a teenager. So what did she do, bought the one I liked most on the lot without me knowing a thing about it and gave it to me for Christmas.

To end this thread, I hope, YES I LOVE MY MUSTANG !

These kind of discussions truly fasincate me. The fact is there will always be something bigger, faster, nicer, better. If there wasn't why make anything new?

If you don't like what you have get somthing else oh wait I am sure you would just complain about that too.

Ford has never had the 'big' hp numbers that GM and Chrysler have put out in mass.

HP dosen't mean anything unless you can get it to the gound so basing comparisons on hp alone is an invalid comparison. You really need to look at the whole picture, trans, grearing, weight, etc.

Just my 2 cents.

the 10 best engines according to wards...the magazine came with a nice poster sized thing showing the details/curves...anyway, the link above has links to all the engines, and forget HP- look at the torque curves- the only one to beat the 4.6 was the hemi...
anyway, neat site- has hp/trq curves of them all- I was really suprised at the bottom end torque on the 4.6, as I'd 'thought' it woulda been a lot lower- its really got a nicetorque curve, just aint a bigblock...

The thing that sticks in my mind is cost, do you think Ford would have sold as many Mustangs if they cost 8K more? I for one would not have bought it if that were the case.
Joe lunchbucket could not have afforded it.
That is one reason why they left off independent rear suspension.

Having two red cars with 300 plus HP each, I have plenty enough to get me in trouble. With the speed limits being set at 65 to 70 in most places how much horsepower can you really use. I do 1/8th mile stadium parking lot drag racing and it's a blast. Any more power and I'd be afraid of running off the already perilously short shut down lane. Unless your car is a dedicated racer most of the HP goes towards wasting gas. Sure, there are cars, and trucks, out there with more HP - if that's what floats your boat, go for it. Facts are, I can eat up Hemi Magnums, Chargers and 300s (not the SRT8 versions ) on two lane on-ramps and that's enough for me.

I think if your worried about ricers or other makes beating you in the quarter mile, then buy a Z06 Vette, that should give you a few years before someone gets on your tail. Or if you dont have 65K, then buy a used zo6, they have plenty of power and is very light and can be had for 35K. Or buy a Mustang GT and spend 8K on engine mods and beat everyone on the street. Simple as that.......The mustang is lighter than the Charger or 300C
