I am a long time AFM member but I rarely post anything but now I thought that I would share my recent experience with American Muscle & Brenspeed.

I am the owner of a 2005 Mustang GT Convertible that I ordered new. Windveil blue with a 5 speed and every option available at the time. I kept the car stock until 2011 when the horsepower itch hit me. I decided to install an Edelbrock 1580 Eforce supercharger and some other items like the FRPP GT500 fuel pump, MFR3 MCGTA handling kit. Later I added CS wheels and a full set of Wilwood big brakes, Borla ARAK axle-back and an Edelbrock 15808 intake. There many other mods but I am too lazy... I installed everything myself except the handling kit.

The car has about 27k miles of summer driving and has never seen rain or snow. It has run great until a couple of weeks ago when my faulty fuel gauge led me astray (GT500 fuel sending unit wire issue) and I ran out of gas. The car ran crappy and died so I got fresh 93 in it and replaced the fuel filter. This got me thinking. The original tune from Edelbrock didn't include factors like my fuel pump upgrade or the air intake. I wanted to make sure my tune was safe with no A/F issues, etc and to squeeze out some more power. I decided it was time to look at this but the local shop that supported me is now out of business so going to them for a custom tune and dyno is no longer an option. I called a couple of other local shops but none of them were mustang specialists and the didn't really know how to handle the Edelbrock SC.

I called American Muscle and talked to Will. Will did a great job helping me out and suggested a Rev-X tuner by SCT and a VMP custom tune. Sounds good I thought but a day later I received this message from American Muscle Tuning (VMP):

Thank you for your order.

I understand that you have the Edelbrock Supercharger kit installed on the vehicle.
We do not offer tuning support for this setup through the American Muscle system. In addition, we do not tune for a couple of the components that come in the Edelbrock kit.

If we would be tuning this setup, it would need to be done through the VMP Performance system - the following would need to be purchased/installed:

- Level 3 Custom Tuning
- 13-14 GT500 Stock 56lb Injectors
- Stock MAF sensor

An American Muscle agent will be tagged in this email chain to provide refund options for this order. Thank you for your understanding.

This was a surprise because Will had highly recommended VMP. I talked to Will about this and he too was surprised and didn't know that VMP doesn't support Edelbrock. Honest mistake. But, VMP wanted me to buy parts that I didn't need for any performance gain just so they could understand my setup. This would have doubled the cost so I got on the phone with an American Muscle agent (not Will) and she told me that there was nothing they could do but they would give me an RMA and take everything back.

Then, I hit AFM forums and found that people have had good things to say about Brenspeed. I have known the Brenspeed name for some time now but not much more. I called Brenspeed and immediately got a hold of Doug. Doug is great and listened when I told him about my setup and wishes. These guys know their sh*# and they really understand Edelbrock systems plus many others. I gave them a complete listing of mods/history on the car and this is something they do regularly. My setup is not unique and they have seen it many times. I ordered the SCT BDX tuner with a custom tune for my detailed setup. I ordered this Wednesday (6/3/2020) afternoon and had the tuner delivered on Monday. I still haven't received the shipment from American Muscle that I needed to return that was ordered a few days earlier.

I really like the BDX tuner and it is painfully easy to use. Almost too easy. I followed the directions; connect to wifi, firmware update, connect to ODB2... etc. I had the new tune installed in just a few minutes. The BDX tuner's other functions are very nice and I highly recommend this.

The car runs and feels great now. Plus, it passed Wisconsin Emissions the next day. Throttle response is quicker plus my butt tells me that HP and Torque are noticeably up. My guess is about 25 more HP and similar on the ftlbs. I may dyno it and compare the numbers with my original sheets soon.

American Muscle is a very good company to work with but they have so many SKU's its probably hard for their people to know everything and I get different opinions from different sales agents. They will stand buy the products and take things back. They are like a big box store to me; if I know exactly what commodity type product to buy, they are good.

Brenspeed is in a different class altogether. They are Mustang specialists and they know all the components on my car... so there was absolutely no guesswork like I would have endured with VMP. Doug at Brenspeed offered excellent advice and is not just trying to sell me stuff. The SCT BDX tuner and Brenspeed custom tune cost me $75 less that the unit from American Muscle with the originally proposed tune. The cost would have been way more if I followed their suggestion of new injectors, etc.

Brenspeed has earned my loyalty. Check out their website if you haven't already.

I ordered a lot from Brenspeed. Never had any problems. Because I have to do that from overseas I cannot afford any mistakes. Very excellent service. Friendly and helpful. They are always trying to offer the cheapest shipping method. And in my case that saves you a lot of money!👍👍
