The usual performance related parts. Cam, aluminum intake, headers and dual exhaust. Also upgrade the suspension and steering. Here is a link for your suspension and steering needs: http://http://www.aftermarketsuspensionparts.com/
If you're not bent on the car staying 100% original, I think I'd swap in a whole other engine and transmission. Then the sky's the limit! Preserve and store the current combo so you can swap it back in if need be. If you stay with a small block, the change back and forth doesn't get much easier.
Check this out. Ford 5 bolt 289 engine to small If you are bent on keeping your original 289, this (or something like this) may be the answer to getting another gear and a whole lot more drivability out of your Fairlane. Just don't toss that old trans, just in case you or someone else later on wants it back to original. The one you need I think is the second one down in the Ford section in the price list. $695.
Otherwise.... "302 it" and watch all of your compatibility problems fade away.
Honestly, I would personally go with mhuggler's idea of just doing a swap and keep your original stuff on a pallet stored away. Once you drop a 6 bolt 289/302/351w into your car, you wont have to worry about finding performance parts again. Your 5 bolt 289 is a fine motor which can be wound up to produce acceptable hp numbers, but you will forever be limited in performance due to your transmission options... or lack of...
No joke wish I would have gone on here years ago lol
