NEED HELP on MOTOR MOUNTS 1965 Mustang FASTBACK

7584 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  The Greek
Well I have decided to keep my 65 Fastback... Putting the 302 motor and tranny in it and I have the correct frame mounts but the motor mounts I got dont seem like they are the right ones. First off, they do not rest on the tab at the bottom of the Frame mount. Secondly if I line up the holes between the frame mount and the motor mount they will sit about 1 1/2 inches above the tab on the bottom of the frame mount.

This is not the problem that concerns me though. The problem is both mounts are exactly the same. Every website I check says that these are the right mounts and that they are interchangable per side but if I place the mounts on the frame mounts with the bolt through them. There is about an 1-1 1/2 inch difference between them. I know the mounts on the block are the same distance from each other. Is this just an optical illusion or am I missing something here. Just to clarify, the mount on the drivers side sits about 1 1-1/2 inches further back than the passenger side mount!! The part number I have is from Anchor and it is #2287. I will try to send a picture later if that would help better explain it but would really like some input here if you have any. The tab on one side of both motor mounts is longer than the other side so if they are truly interchangeable then one side would have the longer tab and one side would have the shorter one.....

Thanks in advance..

Sounds to me that you are mixing parts with the 65 and early 66 mounts and the late 66 mounts. The later mounts don't have a stud, are the same for both sides and use ears on each end that match the holes on the frame portion with a through bolt holding them together. The frame mounting positions are equally distanced, fore and aft, left and right.

Don't try using any of the 67 specific motor mount parts because Ford experimented, in 67 only, with the dimensions on these mounts, (the mounts themselves and the frame portions). They are about 1/4" off at the mounting ears, the through bolt holes won't match up with any other years. This is confusing because the aftermarket doesn't recognize this difference and will list the 67 as being the same mount as the late 66 and 68 mounts. When trying to install the aftermarket mounts on the 67, you will play Hell trying to get the through bolts into the ears. I fought for hours prying and cussing until I found out about the difference. My remedy was to install the frame mounts from a 68 onto my 67. The 67 specific mounts (when you can find them) run about $100 each which makes the swap to the 68 frame portion obvious. As to why the change for only one year, no one seems to have an answer for me.

You shouldn't have any problems once you get the correct group of parts.
