i would go 255/45
I run 275/40/17s on my 17X9 Cobra Rs, no problems at all.
the car is a 89 mustang gt
it depends on your definition of BIG. do you want a larger sidewall? or a WIDER tire. i recommend you give tirerack.com a call. head over to www.tirerack.com, grab the 800 number, and call em up. tell them your car make, model, and year, and what size rims (17x9). they will be able to tell you exactly what size sidewall with which width will fit. for example, on my 88 LX i have 16 x 7 inch pony wheels. i told him i wanted to go as wide as possible. he told me the widest i should safely go (although others have gone wider) is a 235 with a 50 profile. however, i wanted to stick with a 55 profile, so a 225 treadwith is the max. give them a call, its nice to hear it from a pro. also, you might be suprised to find out that youre going too wide. i was trying to fit 245s or 255s on my ponies. i was told that it would fit the wheel, and possibly the car, but would present risks when cornering at high speeds (which i plan on doing often). give em a call.
