Need Suggestions/Help For Motor Swap!

I'm in desperate shape! My '99 GT's motor went south at 55K miles and I'm in need of a new motor. The local Ford dealer wants nearly $5K to install a crate engine comparable to what I had. If I'm gonna lay out that kind of money, I'd really like to get something special. Actually, I wouldn't mind it if the project ended up being $3-4K. What are my engine options? Any reputable sources for motors? I'd like a swap that won't be very complicated to complete. Anyone know if putting in a Cobra motor is very involved? I've seen a few webpages of people who've done it, but there are no real specifics. Also, I'll be hiring a local mechanic to install it... any ideas on what a fair price for the install would be? What exactly is a crate engine, anyway? Thanks for your time!

I remember MM&FF did an article about a year ago on dropping in a cobra motor, but I think it was in a 96-98 bodystyle, which has a return style fuel system. Your best bet would probably be building a 2V motor, BUT I don't know everything. A crate motor is a complete motor sometimes custom built that is shipped in a crate. If any of the engine parts are still good let me know because that could save you a bunch of money.
Why not rebuild what you have...........you would fall into that 3k-4k price range.......

Or you could just get a crate motor and do the install yourself......

I'm just thinking "Dang! $3-4K is a lot of money!", so I'd like to gain something outta the deal... a better motor than I previously had.
