Hey guys, Picked up a 2013 Grabber Blue 5.0 with Track and Tech Pack.

Love the thing so far, traded my 2011 Mustang V6 in for it.

I have a couple questions that hopefully some of you guys can answer.

My hood is vented and it seems that the vent holes are right above where the intake filter is.

If I add a CAI, will water leak onto the filter?

I really have my eye on the Steeda proflow CAI but worried about water getting sucked in to the engine.

Although where I live, it hardly rains but every so often I might have to drive in a passing shower.

Secondly, how many miles should i break her in before really laying in it?

I know everyone has different opinions but I couldnt find it doing a search on the forums. Im at 160 miles so far, and was thinking of taking it easy on her till the 500 mark.

Any insight and opinions are welcome

Oh here she is

Congratulations! Very nice color choice. My 2011 GT/CS was GB.

As far as break in goes you are going to get 1001 answers. Just go as what you think is comfortable for you. probably no different than your previous v6.

As far as water issue, this is another opinionated topic. The only company that didn't do anything about water issue for the 2013 is steeda. JLT, airaid, and C&L all came up with a solution. Some will tell you that water soaking up the filter is no biggie, however, I will not be the one that will find out with my $35k vehicle if filter getting soaked is ok, and the filter does get wet. I will stick with 3 vs 1.

Congradulations and best of luck. My opinion on the break in would be 1K miles. That is what I did with mine. I think Airaid has a fix for the water issue.

Thanks, I'll probably do alittle more research and mabye make a couple calls to see which will work best for me.

I want the GT500 axelbacks too! Where did you order your shift knob from?

Thank you, I hope I can make it to 1k miles.. I already have had a couple ricers tailgate me =(, was so hard not to lay the smack down on them.

One thing I did realize is that CAI comes down to choice. If you look at the dyno I believe it was steeda? that posted a while back, they all fall within 1-3hp. I personally went with airaid and yes, airaid does come with a shield that mounts on the heat shield that goes on top of the filter to prevent water getting on the filter. The only thing that I'm having hard time with now is choosing between intune and sct. I would hate to go with sct and have to deal with bricked ecu vs tuner options with Intune. Good luck.

We currently have the CAI on our DD and it has been through all sorts of storms, car washes, etc. ... and no issues.

If this was an issue that we were seeing with water causing an issue ... then we would have created a solution ... but we have had no issues with water causing issues.

In addition, when the vehicle is in motion there is high pressure under the hood and low pressure above it, so the flow is actually out from the engine bay rather than in.

Here is an article that we did back a couple months ago .. you can use this as reference to what our CAI is all about.

Yes we did do a study a while back that showed slight performance gains with all the leading brands ... what that test didn't show is that when you add the tune and other performance parts to our CAI that it really allowed the car to breath.

Do your research on the boards and see what members are saying about the Steeda CAI, I am sure you will be very happy with the reviews.

You can also check out our Steeda exhaust system with this video below:

Please let me know if I can help you with forum pricing (cheaper if a package deal is going to be ordered), questions, etc. Please email me at tim @ steeda.com for further support.

My break in routine is to drive it normally. You don't need to baby it, but also you shouldn't be abusing it. No full throttle or redline for the first few hundred miles, then no extended full throttle for the first K in my book.

More important is to vary your speed constantly during the first 1K miles. Don't use cruise control. Most of my break in happened in city driving, so I had a lot of varying rpms with all the shifting.

Also, keep an eye on that oil level. Check it today and check it often. It is common for the 5.0s to use a lot of oil during the first 10K.

Why don't you read your manual as to breaking in the engine?

I know the 11 & 12 5.0 manual states there is no break in required. May be different for the 13's....
My manual says no extended wide open throttle (1/4 runs) for the first 100 miles. No where does it say avoid hitting red line, or avoiding full throttle.

I hit red line a half of dozen times the first 100 miles in mine. My car runs strong, I burn no oil, I don't have the famous 5.0 tick, etc....

Looks like we have the exact same car. I put in the Airaid with the guard on it. I would also get the JLT oil separators ASAP. As for break in, I waited 500 miles then took it to a road course and really got on it. No problems.

I also put in a larger throttle body and Magnaflow Competition Cat Backs. Bama Tune and that is it so far. Shifter is next.

Yes, it absolutely will. Here is a youtube link by a popular 2013 GT owner who posts a lot of really cool and informative videos. I'd subscribe to his channel; he's done a lot of mods, both cosmetic and performance, and has made videos of them. Anything from comparing racing tunes to sounds of different exhaust systems, to track runs, to how different rims and body kit pieces look.

Anyways here's the vid:

2013 Ford Mustang GT Hood Vent Water Test With Steeda Cold Air Intake - YouTube

Whether or not its enough to cause any damage is up for debate. But I'd rather play it safe and get a CAI that doesn't have that issue.

C&L has made a special cai for the 2013 mustangs that doesn't allow for water to hit the filter. I figure that all of the cai's that require a tune are pretty close with regards to their gains so why not get one that will protect my filter from water. I haven't gotten it yet but I plan on within a few months.

Here is the link to the C&L intake:

C&L Mustang Cold Air Intake - (2013 GT) 10699-13-P - Free Shipping!

You can also go to C&L's website and they'll explain indepth their cai's design as well as the extra feature on the 13' cai's that prevent water from getting in. Even though the filter is still exposed, there is a rubber/foam like rib ontop of the heatshield that is suppose to fit up to the top part of the hood forming a good seal.

They're suppose to come already broken in from the factory but I'd wait 500-1000 miles just to be safe. I did hear that its best to do as much city driving in that time period (varying speeds) than to do a lot of highway driving (more constant speeds) though. I think you're safe waiting 500 miles before seeing what it can do.

Nice car BTW. At first I didn't like the grabber blue but once I saw it in person my mind changed. Still ended up going with white, but grabber blue/deep impact blue would still be my 2nd choice. Looks sweet :)

Yea I forgot Ariaid started doing that. You order the cai and included is a form where you can obtain a free guard for your 2013 GT if you want it. I think as time goes on more and more companies will start adding in some sort of guard or barrier. It doesn't cost a whole lot and I'd pay 20 bucks more just for the piece of mind that my filter is dry even if it being wet wont cause any problems.

I spent 30k+ on it and another 4-5k+ in mods. Whats 20 bucks extra?

Good points. I do prefer the look of the steeda vs all the others as well. The fact that it makes 1-3 hp more is even better. I already have a Diablo Trinity so tuning it wont be an issue.

Okay will do, I might pick up the Catch Can sooner than later hopefully. Ive only ordered the Barton 2 post Shifter Bracket so far.

Nice looking car man. Congrats.
Thanks Jarrod :yup:

Read the manual? :heha: Ever since I was about 5 years old I picked up the bad habit of not reading the manual.. Much easier to find the info online and what not.

Like I told TJ earlier, I will probably just fabricate something to cover that portion of the vents from the inside. I like being able to see the CAI when you pop the hood and the cover would defeat that purpose.

Thanks for the advice though brother :bigthumbsup

Follow the owner's manual for break in and service maintenance...

Do not listen to any advice you get from a Mustang forum… The replier might not have a clue and possibly be a fudge popsicle…

That heard it on the internet so it must be true is very wrong, it’s all a lie….

I highly doubt it would ever get enough water through the filter to hydrolock the engine. I used to run a Vararam CAI on my Vette and I had that thing in some torrential downpours with never a problem. (sorry about the Corvette stuff on a Mustang forum, just trying to show how it could suck water in .)

That thing took a direct shot from the front of the car and the filter would get a little wet but never enough to do harm.

Look at Steeda's post. They would have addressed the issue if there was one.

I am telling you from a manufacturing stand point ... that if we were having issues with CAIs and water damaging them ... then we would be losing money correct. That is simply not the case.

We don't feel the need to fix a so called "problem" and pass on the extra cost to the consumer when in fact all of our tests, engineering, and developments, have not had any issues with this scenario.

We have had the same CAI on our DD for over a year now ... and it is still running as good as it did the day we installed it.

Here is our test video ...

Our other car was driven from Sebring to Pompano in May, during a particularly nasty storm, not a single problem. And when I say nasty storm most people say run for cover…
