Hey guys! I'm new here and haven't had much experience with my Mustang yet. I received a 1965 stang from my grandma as a first car last year and I am planning on working on it this summer. After I get her up and running again and I get her nice and safe, I'd love to get a new engine to show up all the kids at school in their 2004 stangs. As of right now, I have a 200 6 cylinder engine. That's about all I know. But I want something cheap, with a lot more torque and a lot more horsepower. I heard getting a 300 some 6 cylinder from and old pick-up truck or something heavy is a great way to hit speed fast and maintain speed. Is this true? I don't necessarily look to race right away, considering I'm a new driver and with all the blood sweat and tears I'm putting into this beautiful piece of work, I don't want to risk beating her up too badly. I just want amazing sound and amazing performance. Plus, isn't it always great to be able to have amazing speed when needed? theres alot you can do to the straight 6, the 300's are good running engines. Not sure what you mean by Cheap. But IMO best bang for the buck would be to swap a 302 into it.

Yeah I would say 302 too. Why do all the work of an engine swap and put a 6 cyl back in it? That's what I asked myself about my truck. Honestly, what I would do is go ahead and convert the suspension to the v8 suspension, rear end, and bolt pattern and keep the 6 for a while and work on building a 302 when you have the money.

hope you have a big piggy bank,,horse power ain't cheap,,you'll need plenty of horse power to show up those 2004 mustangs, if they are v-8's,,,swapping from a 6 cylinder to a v-8, you will also need to do some front suspension work,,,

I was looking at 351 widndsors for it, i. Might have to do some bodywork to the car to fit it, but would that be worth all the money I would put into it

Engine swaps are big money especially when going from six to eight. If you do decide to do it make sure you stay with a late model motor. Remember you will have to change all your running gear and suspension too. good luck .

first of all welcome to the site. secondly the search function or google is your friend you can google or search mustang 6 to 8 swaps and find a ton of information that has been written up on it. in order to do a v-8 swap you will basically be replacing the entire suspension and drive train. I would go with a 5.0 from a fox mustang. the 351 is much bigger and doesn't fit real nice in a 65 you need conversion headers etc. the 5.0 is easier and there is a ton of aftermarket support for it you can make it as fast as you want but it will not be cheap to do it right. having said that I did just that on my daughters 67.
