I have an opportunity to purchase a 2001 mustang base model for $1500. The car has a blown head gasket. My question is for the money do you guys think its a good buy, and how much do you think it would take to get it in great condition. this will be a car for my daughter who is in college so it doesnt need to be fast or modified t just needs to be reliable. The interior is mint and it appears to be in great condition otherwise. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

If its in great condition then I'd say go for it at that price. I sold my 2001 V6 in May and got $11,000 for it. It was a good solid downpayment for the 2012 GT I ordered. The book values on used Stangs are always lower than they should be. People were calling and asking if I'd take $3,000 or $4,000 since that was the book price. I'd tell them to come and take a look at it and see the condition it was in and then tell me that it was only worth $3 - $4 K.

Hmm.. blown head gasket could be a simple fix and it could be a major disaster.. depending on how well it was maintained and how long it was driven/pushed afterwards.

It could be a steal?

Def need pics!

Welcome to AFM! I'm assuming since you said base model you mean V6. If that's the case check out our V6 sections and see what the guys/ gals there think it takes to fix the blown head gasket issue. I always thought it was a pretty pricey venture to do so... especially if there are other things that were damaged in the process.

Keep us posted!
