Leave in on... The only time you might want to disable 5th gear is if you were pulling a trailier up a long mountain pass and the car kept shifting up to 5th (loose RPM's) then shifts back to 4th over and over again... disable OD at that point to keep it in 4th.

I don't know why they didn't just put 5 gears (notches) on the shift column. That way you could just move the lever to 4 and that would be that.
turn it off , o/d is good above 50mph !
Your rpm`s will be in the wright place if you have to get on it , you would not want a GTO or some other car getting a jump on you from a roll !:winks
so leaving it off is going to give me a better response in throttle and rpm?
Sure. Turn it off. Better open your wallet further at the gas pump. :wavey

Yes your car will get into the torque band faster ! witch is higher in the rpm !
For example ,if you and another auto mustang were doing say 45mph he has his o/d OFF and you have it ON , the stang that has to down shift less (him)4th to 2nd vs. (you) 5th to 2nd , who do you think is going to pull ahead ?
Another example if you are on the highway and doing say, 80mph in 5th ,and a GTO rolls along side you , if you were to push that little button in , get into 4th , then you rpm`s come up into your torque band , you will get much better throttle response , because your car will not have to down shift and lose time !

(im in no way condoning any kind of highway racing :smoke: )
thanx! alot:kooky: :kooky:
just drive your car around town in 4th,,,and then when slowing up shift it down to 3rd,,,,saves on the breaks.....And when you start on the highway then you can put it into 5th......If Gas was a problem you should not have a GT...JohnnyT
I drive all of my cars and trucks that have a O/D automatic trans with the O/D off in the City or below 50 mph and with the O/D on while on the highway/freeway that is moving. In bumper to bumper the O/D is off until such time as the speed is at 50 mph or greater.

I inform the Police officer that drive the cars that I provide them to drive them with the O/D off while in town. Even the Fire Trucks I over see are driven with the O/D off unless they are on the freeway.

With the O/D off and while driving below 50 mph the engine is at it best rpm range.
You really dont need to have OD on unless your in the highway.

Leave it off until you are cruising on the highway. Driveability will be better.

Yep, better to put the wear on a $3,000 tranny than a set of $25 break pads!

I think the Tramsmisions are a lot better then the ones from the 70s....
The newer automatics are made for shifting down gear.....
But I always change cars before they hit 36,000 miles...So i guess I will be getting a 2008 stang when they come out..JohnnyT:eyebulge:
better order it now johhny, with the way the ordering/recieving process goes, lol.
