O2 sensors cleaning

I just tried to clean my O2 sensors. I dont think I ever get a check engine light but I never touched the sensors till now. Ive had the car since 47k and its at 111k now. Figured maybe if I cleaned them the car may run better. I guess well see what happens. Do you think the gas mileage will get better, will the car run better?

The car drives fine, just thought Id clean them. :headscratch:

not sure... keep us posted!
Will do. :hihi:
no way to clean o2 sensors.they just erode, nobody can clean that:so
might think about just replacing it, there not horribly expensive
I put them back in after I cleaned them w some cleaner, forget which, and a toothbrush. I realise that the sensor is on the inside, and its hard to "clean" them. Some people say its not even good to clean them. Anyways, I did clean them and stuck them back in the pipes. No check engine light, and the car ran just as it did before, but now its got 50 more hp!
A handheld tuner can tell you in real time if the O2 sensors are working correctly...maybe if you clean the tailpipes you'll gain another 50 hp !
o2 sensors

my 98 gt was running bad with a rough idle and it was slow and sluggish it sounded like a 7cyl. i gave it some seafoam and cleaned the maf sensor and that didn't help. so i checked the rear o2 sensors and they had dirt and stuff clogged on them so i tapped them on the metal frame and cleaned the outside of them with a damp paper towel. and then i fired it up and its normal again sounds like a good ole v8 now.

so you could try cleaning them if you want too. i just cleaned the outside of them.
Don't tap them on anything!!!!!!!

There are fragile ceramic parts (heater and sensing element) inside the metal shell that will break if you tap it too hard on anything. Just like hitting a china plate with a hammer, it will break rather easily. Your check engine light will let you know if they are not operating within the original specs. If your CEL is not on, they are fine.

funny...if it aint broke dont fix it
O2 sensors compare the gas passing by the cage part (inside) Vs the gas (air) around the top part (outside the exhaust)

If the top part is dirty or damaged it will not read fresh air correctly, i'm sure i saw somewhere that things like WD40 etc. can permanently mess up O2 sensors.
Hello i just recently purchased a 98 mustang with 90k miles, its in good condition to say the least, i did a full tune up, motor oit, transmission, spark plugs etc etc. drove it for 2 weeks and got the CEL. I used my OBDll scanner and got p1151 code, i erased it and it popped back up then it went away. I ran the scan again while the CEL was not present and this time i got codes p0411, p0174, and p1151. Could all this be relatede to faulty O2 sensors? both upstream and downstream? Need feed back plz.
