I know one method for a fast off the line start is to hold the break and apply throttle. What about maintaining revs in Neutral and dropping the shift into Drive? Not sure how the car would react to that.

That is what's known as a neutral drop. Back in the old days (before computers) it worked great, except that it causes a lot of wear and tear on your tranny. Nowadays many automatics won't let the car go from neutral to drive if the RPM's are over a set value (like 1500).
DON'T DO IT!. It would be nice if that is true about not being able to engage over 1500 RPM'S.
A friend of mine (Kind of an idiot) did that several years back. Totally reved the engine and put it in Drive. The Ujoints EXPLODED at the rear differential area. The drive shaft was spinning with since he was still laying on the gas. The shaft bounced all over tore up the ground and F*#! -up the floorboards. It nailed is Trans line, fuel line and I think even a brake line or proportioning valve.
Save your car.......and don't get caught looking like an idiot or having your car towed...
OK, my car is a stick. I have experienced wheel-hop two different times. Both times tires had residual water from washing the car. I turned off the TCS the second time and it still did it. Once the hop starts I quickly lift off the gas pedal.
My question: "Why do these things have wheel-hop anyway"??? :green
Mine is stick GT, dry roads I can fry the tires at will with no wheel hop, wet roads, when I spin em I get hop. Try getting Steeda lower control arms, I have mine on order. It should help. Bottom line, ya really don't want to smoke/ spin tires in the wet cuz yr just asking for trouble. These Mustangs have decent stock suspensions but, with little cash you can turn em into Grand Am racers.
That brings back bad memories...tried the neutral drop back in 1987 with a Z28....worked a few times...then the tranny exploded! Yep....moron city and I had 5 girls in the car too! "Dad, I don't know what happened...it just stopped...this car is a piece of crap!" :shrug

I, being an idiot when I was younger, used to do this. (Although still an idiot, I no longer do this.)
The first disaster was on the way home from getting a custom dual exhaust on my '68 Firebird. It felt and sounding so nice, I tried a neutral drop at a light. The rear U-joint went and destroyed my brand new mufflers!
Not being one to learn a lesson easily, the next year I was at a light next to a girl in a beautiful GTO and did the neutral drop again. This time it not only smashed up the mufflers, it broke the drive shaft attachement on the rear end and ruined the drive shaft. That marked the end of my neutral drop days. I must say though, that THM 350 tranny must have been strong, beacuase it never even whimpered after all the abuse it took.
Thanks for the feedback on the neutral drop. Good news is I have not tried it... Even better news is I got my mustang delivered yesterday!!!
Silver GT, Black interior, IUP, Spoiler Delete, standard MAG wheels, auto trans. I have to say that this auto is pretty darn good (coming from somebody who prefers manuals).
