Fortunately it was all in good fun!

While at Lake Texoma this weekend, three state troopers and a few local cops set up a road block on the road going to the lake that my in-laws live on (they were checking driver’s license and insurance). I knew to expect them b/c my husband had already been through there previously.

So the trooper tells me what their doing and I told him I’d heard about it from my husband and I handed him my license and insurance cards. He walks to the back of the car (the '08 BTW -- I suspect to see if my tag was current) and tells another trooper “hey, come here and look at this.” So the second trooper walks back there and the third one follows him. For those who don’t know, my tag is ACDCROX. Trooper #1 comes back to my window and says “I’m going to have to seize your car, it looks too fast.” I replied “It’s just a little old GT; Ford sells them to everyone.” He handed me my cards backs and told me to have a good day. :)

I've had 3 or 4 "checkpoints" in my town in the last month. I used to see 1 a year. The cops are trying to get as much cabbage as they can.

You should have hit the officer with that 40oz beer you were drinking and then lead them on a CNN worthy chase.:happyhapp

Just kidding. The officer obviously liked your car.

I could have done that but the road I was on only leads to a flooded campground. I'd have had no where to go unless I could've turn the car into a boat! (But the boat ramps were closed anyway!) It just wasn't meant to be. :nogrinner

Your Papers Please

The checkpoint cops were hoping your papers were not in order so they could impound your car. Charge you for towing and storage fees. And if they were lucky, you would protest and they could arrest you as well.

You realize these checkpoints are unconstitutional right?
You don't have to give up your license under the 4th amendment.
Refuse to give up your license, theres not a thing they can do.

I think it is illegal to *not* provide identification, when asked for it, as well.

The whole "checkpoint" thing does make me think of the communist block countries, from just after WWII.

"Let me see your papers!"

Yeah there is nothing they can do, besides arrest you and charge you with a class C misdemeanor.
Next time you might want to actually know what you are talking about before shooting your mouth off.

I like it when cops are cool and have a sense of humor. Many years ago I had a 75 mustang II that I stuffed a fully built 351W into, and I had a few run ins with the law. One of the run ins, there were some kids behing me pointing and laughing at my car, so at the next stop, I took off hard and roasted the tires through the intersection until I was at about the speed limit then eased off .. seconds later through the cloud of smoke a cop came around the corner pulling a Starsky and Hutch, and proceeded to race toward me with lights blazing. Fortunately as I pulled over he saw the kids that were behind me laughing and pointing as they passed me, so he came to my door and hitched up his belt and said "pretty fast car you got here.." I simply gave him a sheepish look and said "Yeah..". He grinned and said "Save that stuff for the race track". We chatted about the car for a few minutes and he left, no ticket or even a warning.

Those officers sounded friendly enough and seemed to like your car.
I hope you at least offered them a swig from the open beer in your cupholder?

The Courts Opinion

What the court recently said was that searching your car for no reason other than you were at a check point was aginst the 4th admendment. Asking a driver for their papers is ok. Now passengers... Cops need probable cause. This is why for some people they ride in back with a driver. There is a degree of seperation and you are not by default required to identify yourself.
