So about a year and a half ago I bought a 2008 Mustang it was all stock with the 4.0 SOHC engine. It had about 80,000 miles on it half of those miles were from a rental company and the other half was a private owner both in Florida. I live and bought the car in Tennessee. I have put a new cold air intake, dual x pipe exhaust, new spark plugs, new water pump, and I change the oil and filter every 2000 miles. I baby it when I drive it because it's the first car I've owned on my own. It is now about 900 miles away from 90,000.

Ok here is my problem. I have had a slow coolant leak for a few weeks and I just kept adding water. It got bad enough I needed to fix it my initial thought was the water pump because it was making a small squeaking noise. I replaced it and the problem did not resolve. So I dug deeper and determined that the thermostat housing was the true culprit. It was leaking coolant down on to the water pump which is why I though it was the water pump initially. So I took off the air intake manifold and what do you know there is coolant all over the water pump and in the engine valley.

But I then noticed another problem there was oil in the front of the engine valley and quite a bit, maybe a 1/4 cup. My initial thought was a bad head gasket but I don't have any other symptoms of a bad head gasket. And I can't follow the oil trail because there is coolant everywhere.

If it is a head gasket I don't know which one. I know that if it's the passenger side head then the whole engine has to be pulled because of where the timing chain is. Any advice on how to diagnose the issue further or if you have had a similar problem would be appreciated. Also I've thought I may just need to replace the thermostat houseing cut my losses and sell the car.

Maybe the oil got spilled during an oil change. Clean it up and check it at your next oil change.

I have a 2006 V6. I had one thermostat housing crack, and more recently the o-ring on the sensor started leaking. Try the o-ring first. Save you a few bucks from changing the housing. If that doesn't fix it, then you already have a new o-ring on there for the swap.
