Oil Pressure relief Valve

3053 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  05mystang
I have a 2005 V6, there is a problem with oil pressure, it keeps blowing the oil filter.

My guess is that it is the Oil pressure relief valve.

Does anybody know how i can replace this and where it is located in the engine?

Thank You

It is in the oil pump on the 4.0 SOHC. You will need to drop the pan and cradle to get to it. Not a fun job at all on this engine when in the car. What brand/model oil filter are you using?
it was a valvoline oil filter. and the oil was valoline 10 - 30w so do i need to replace the whole oil pump?

What other reason could there be for the oil filter to be failing like that, a blockage maybe?
ve seen some pretty crappy filters in my time that would easily fall apart. I would personally only use a Motorcraft - FL-820-S. Most auto parts store stock them and the price is not bad. They are one of the highest rated filters on the market. Have you though about installing an oil pressure gauge to see what the actual oil pressure is?

Lol did you really just copy and paste that from Nice Pony off the Mustang Forums?

To the OP what did the dealership say? Are you still under warranty? Check to see if there is an old gasket led stuck to the engine. It won't cause your filter to blow, but you should be using 5w-30 in these cars, not 10w-30

Ahahahaha yeah. I was waiting to see how long it would take before the OP said anything. :kooky:
I'm not sure what "blowing the oil filter" means. Most of the filters for these engines have a nasty habit of leaving the old gasket on the engine so if you don't look up there, remove it and clean the mating surface you'll have a nice surprise when you re-start. You have to raise the car and put it on stands to change the oil in order to do it right.

+1 on the 5W-30. These engines have tight tolerances and need the thin oil on start-up in cold temperatures.

Lol ok

OP, is there any visual damage to the filters you have lost?
