I went to install my oil pump driveshaft today. So i slide the shaft down the distributor hole until the little unbrella type guard hit the block, well realizing the oil pump driveshaft was almost to short and wouldnt go into the oil pump hole. It is a stock replacement oil pump. Do i need a longer rod!?! What would cause this?

it goes in from the bottom, before you mount the oil pump. and the clip keeps it from coming out when you pull the distributor.

I haven't met anyone yet that can install that shaft from the top due to it not being long enough to control the end and get it into the oil pump... and it won't just drop into the pump either. The tolerances are too tight to think it'll fall in.
That clip is supposed to be on the underside of the boss, so it doesn't get pulled out of the pump when the distributor is pulled out.

Hey guys, yeah the whole thing was the car was supposed to be done for my 16th birthday which was on sunday but unfortunatly right when i went to do the timing with the distributor I realized about the oil pump shaft. But w/e im sure it will be done by the weekend. Just its such a big job. But what I was thinking, if I made up a tool to fit down the side, to hold the clip down at the bottom, then to take the shaft put it down the hole, then bang on it with a punch or even a strong piece of straight steel, then reef up on the clip to the top where its supposed to be. Just now i have to make a tool stong enough and long enough to go down to the oil pump to hold the clip in place while i bang the shaft into it. Its a great idea I just have to put it all together.
