Anybody here with a 2011 5.0 notice their car eating oil? I don't see any leaks on the ground in my parking spot. But recently I checked my oil (~5000 miles after the last oil change, 42% life left), and the oil barely reached the bottom of the dip stick! I promptly added enough oil to reach the bottom of the hashed area... but I find it incredibly odd for a car with 24,000 miles on it to consume oil like that.

Anybody else have this issue? I don't see any smoke coming from the exhaust, and no leaks.

pretty common, almost every 5.0 does it for the first 5-10k miles though at 24k thats abit odd still...

According to the Ford Owner's Guide the oil level should be checked at-least every month.

My practice w/ ~1.5M driving miles is to check the oil level at every fuel fill-up. That also permits a visual inspection of the engine compartment.

A frequent level check permits visual observation of the fluid condition and oil consumption.

Did you check it right after the change to verify you started with 8 quarts? Just at the bottom of the dipstick would indicate you still had approx. 6 quarts left.

I *thought* I had checked it after the last oil change, but I'm not 100% sure (yeah, it's been that busy the past couple of months). So it's possible 6 quarts were put in, but I highly doubt it, since the guy who did my oil change I know personally, and has worked on me and my friends 5.0s the past two years and done numerous oil changes on them.

He did say that apparently 2 quarts in 5000 miles is within Ford's usage parameters; so the dealership probably won't bother trying to pursue anything related to it.

Lesson of this story, is to check my oil more often, and carry a bottle of synthetic blend with me.

Hey orgchem,

I recommend you make an appointment with your dealer for diagnosis as soon as possible. If you need further assistance, don’t hesitate to PM me.

My 2012 GT has almost 15,000 miles on it and it used almost 2 qts of oil since the previous oil change at 10,000 miles. I check the level once or twice a week. The oil usage is much lower than it was when I bought the car new. I change the oil every 5,000 miles and use a 5w-20 synthetic.

Same thing here!
Guys, if this is becoming a concern for you, please make an appointment with your dealers. Then, PM me with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and best daytime number so I can get this escalated to the customer service manager for your area.

It's only a concern for me if burning 2 qts of oil every 5,000 miles is outside of the ordinary for this engine.
It would also be a concern if there was smoke out of the tail pipes, oil on the ground, bottom side of the motor was wet, reduced performance etc. None of that is the case. It just consumes the oil and has to be watched. I can deal with that. Over time and mileage the consumption has lessened by about 80%, but that still leaves 20%.

I have never had to add any oil and the car has 12,000 miles. I change the oil every 5,000 miles.
And that is what is so weird with the 5.0 oil usage thing. Some use it and some don't. Some burn a lot a first then settle down. Some don't use any from day 1. That is what I want an answer to, WHY?

OP a bit reversed from the norm of burning oil and then tapering off. Might be worth your while to have a compression test performed. Unless your driving habbits have changed and your doing more spirited driving?

Mine was an oil consumer, 1qt every 3k miles and now its 1qt every 5k miles after 23,5k miles. I had the compression test performed on mine early on.

How often does the gas pedal meet the floor? If you are a spirited driver then you are losing quite a bit to blow-by.

I floor it every chance I can get. Not necessarily that often, because I live in a city. Probably once every day or two?
Theres your oil loss right there.

Still might want to have a dealer check it if you are still paranoid.

Its kind of expected of this car to take some oil when driving hard. Theres a JLT video with a Mustang doing one or two laps around a track and there was quite a bit of oil in the seperator afterwards.

The way they explained it to me was it would determine if anything was going on with the cylinders. Takes a couple hours to do and they were feeding information back and forth with FORD. They really took it seriously and I was quite pleased with the effort and piece of mind it brought. Perhaps I have read 1 too many "ford blew me off" posts but I can say my experience with warranty work was top notch and second to none.

What they did is they ran the test and got some bench marks and made sure everything was in spec. They then changed the oil and got a bench mark on the dip stick. After 1k miles I go back and they run the compression test again and check out how much oil was consumed.

These links do a much better job of explaining then me.

What will a compression test tell me? — Yahoo! Autos

Here was my old thread on it. If you get it performed, post up your compression numbers. I was 160 - 170.
