Overaxle pipes have a flat spot on them

1230 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  stlwagon
I was under my car last week and noticed that my intermediate pipes were pinched right above the axle. It looks like the suspension caught the pipes between the braces above the axle and the body. The pipes are definitely pinched a little. I can not find anybody selling them but the dealership. They want $109 per side for a pipe that goes from the H-pipe to the axle backs. (I think I actually heard my wallet let out a whimper :nogrinner)

Anyone else have this happen to theirs?

Anyone know where I can buy the intermediate pipes?
I saw another thread (older) where someone bought one side for $75 from the dealer for their V6 dual pipe conversion.

I am getting ready to go with an off-road X-pipe and figured I could replace them at the same time.

Anybody know if Cervini's sells the ones from their sidepipe conversions?

The OEM pipe connecting to the mufflers ARE "pinched", i.e., somewhat "flattened", where the axle/body intersect: that's "normal" and a designed-in feature of that portion of the exhaust system for purposes of clearance.

That having been said, it's probably a good idea to have the dealership look at it on the rack before you conclude that you have a problem/decide to change out the pipes on your own.

Mine just looked scratched right above the axle on both sides. Looked "fresh" to me. I went over to a friend's house to check on him since we heard he tore his rotator cuff, and bottomed out in his driveway pretty bad. Had to put my car on the rack and loosen all the pipes and lift them up and then re-tighten them all.

When they put the Supertrapps on they cut the end off the pass. side pipe just above the little dimple. I would like to replace it and give myself the option of going back to the Flowmasters if I wanted. :scratchchin

The flat spot gives you clearance with the panhard brace. It's a necessary evil.
You can get a set of new over-axle pipes from (hold your breath) RPMOutlet for ~$100. They don't have the bend either. Becareful though, because if you are lowered, they will likely bang against the panhard bar brace due to not having the flat spot of the factory ones.

Not worth the hassle. That isn't going to do much to the exhaust flow anyway.

Well, I ordered them from RPM Outlet on 5/19/08. They refunded my money on 5/22/08 but didn't email me or anything else to let me know. Now I am sitting here waiting with an off-road X-pipe and my mechanic is going to open the shop so I can use the lift to install it on Saturday. But no pipes to install. I emailed RPM Outlet and they are not available for shipment so they refunded my money. The answer to my email today was when I found out. :so

Now I am still looking for the over axle pipes, and have no idea where to look for another set short of paying Ford $109 EACH! I need the passenger side because the exhaust guy cut it off at the rear to put on the Supertrapps. Both of them need replacing due to the bottoming out in the driveway.

So, my search continues. Guess I can cross RPM Outlet off my list of companies to deal with.

Pypes makes an overaxle pipe that they market with their mid-muffler system. It's not listed separately but I'd bet you could buy them if you called Pypes directly.

I actually had to put a few washers between the panhard brace and the car to give me a little extra room.
I am having a time trying to keep mine from rattling now. But mine is hitting the little piece of bar going across the floor pans. The factory idea of a driveshaft loop? I have to jack it up on a lift and readjust everything and it is good for another month.

On another note, a co-worker just bought a GT and she parked it by mine and when I came out, mine looks a LOT lower than hers. She has the 18" wheels from the factory, but mine is still a lot lower than hers. Think I will look at the springs tomorrow and see if they are stock. I'll already be working on it taking my CAI off until I can get it straight with Sniper. JLT and Tunable Inductions are not in the Sniper and I am having trouble getting the transfer function on it. :weeps :banghead::frustrated:

I wrapped a pipe insulator and tie wrapped it on the panhard brace to keep mine from rattling. It's not real pretty, but effective.

Hope it's heat resistant and not that foam stuff.
