I'm getting ready to paint a turn signal hood and I'm not sure if the turn signal area is supposed to be painted, or if they are chrome or what. I also need to know how these signals are wired. Any help on either of these would be appreciated.

My blinker hood is original, mine are painted same color as car (red), I've never seen them not the color of the car.

The wires for both meet up on the left drivers side and the wires feed through a round hole in the under hood framing just under the left one. They come back out of a round hole just below it close to the rear of the hood. 3 wires, one grounds to a screw on the cowl panel concealed when the hood is closed, the other 2 go to a 2 prong plug that connects into the wiring harness that leads through the firewall between the brake MC and inner fender corner. The harness is sold by most suppliers, if yours wasn't original you will have to read wiring schematics to figure out where to tap in and get a signal from the turn signals and hazard switch.

I believe that the connector for the signals is in the harness even if they weren't used. The connector wires are colored this way:
Right signal= White/Blue Stripe
Left signal= Green/White Stripe
The ground wire which is in the hood portion of the wire harness is Black.
The portion of the signal assy that holds the bulb is, semi-gloss black, at least mine were, as well as the grill portion of the signal assy. The main fixture that mounts to the hood is the body color.
Look for a two prong connector that will be coming out of the main harness at the same location as the connector for the brake failure light which is at the brake distribution block. The block assy. is is under the master cylinder along the left rear inner fender at the firewall.

I asked on another 'original stickler' forum and they responded that the turn signal vent assembly's are painted all body color originally. I can't imagine ford taking just that part off the line to paint the grills black but that would look better I think. It would make the turn signals stand out more when on and give it that 'air inlet' look.

Come to think of it you're right Greek, the 2 plug harness should be there on all cars equipped original or not, mine has the fog lights pigtail but i don't think it came with it. I'm pretty sure the entire under hood harness from bulbs to 2 prong plug is <$20.

Thanks guys I don't know much about the classic stangs, this one was my dads. I'm trying to finish the car in his memory. When he bought it, it had an aftermarket fiberglass hood that neither of us liked. He always liked the turn signal hood so he bought one, it's in good condition, but needs to have the turn signals installed along with the vent portion and painted to match the car.
