I have a 2010 Mustang V6 automatic with about 149,000. I had the transmission replaced about a year and a half ago, and I've been noticing that it has been slipping a little lately when shifting gears. This morning I went to back out of my driveway and the shifter shifted just fine, but it would not recognize that it was in reverse. I slowly rolled out of my driveway and onto the street, then I shifted into drive. The car just stayed right there in the street like it was in neutral. I turned off and on my car several times but nothing changes. It just idle's at 1000 rpm.

The shifter isn't loose, and it can shift into each gear like normal. I just cannot get the transmission to kick into the recognized gear. Any suggestions before I take it to a shop???

Oh, and the only light that is on my instrument panel is for the oxygen sensor, but I had that replaced already. Other than that, there are no other lights. And I have a code checker, and it just reads for the O2 problem.

(This is my first post btw, and thanks for helping me out!!)

How's your battery? My transmission got very wonky like that when my battery died. Wouldn't shift or recognize anything either. New battery fixed it.

For me, it was acting weird, and I knew the battery was dying by the way it started that morning. I had to get to work though, so drove to work and figured I'd get a new battery on the way home. After work it wouldn't start. I jumped it and left work. I didn't get far at all. Car just stopped shifting. When I left work it shifted from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and then just stopped shifting. Wouldn't upshift, downshift, etc. Sport mode wouldn't work, I couldn't over ride it, etc. I couldn't do anything but pull over and put it in park. I called someone to stop and bring me a new battery. I changed the battery on the side of the road and the car and been just fine ever since.

Anyways, if your battery is good, I got nothing. My car was tripping big time when the battery went out though.

Was the slipping getting progressively worse? Is the trans fluid level okay? What color is the fluid on a white paper towel? Does it smell burned?

Is it still going into the Park detent/holding the car in place...sort of ruling out the shift cable being disconnected?

The battery is fine. I just bought a new one about 2 months ago. I took off the positive terminal for about 5 minutes to see if it would reset anything, but it didn't do anything else.

I haven't checked the transmission fluid. I know that this model doesn't have a dipstick, so I would have to take it into like a Jiffy Lube to get it checked.

And I have been smelling a burning smell for the past 2k miles, but I chalked it up to me driving over a thick plastic bag and it being singed on the headers or muffler. It was a strong plastic smell, but I have not been under my car lately, so I an not 100% sure if that is the culprit.

Also, it is shifting just fine. There is no play with the shifter at all. It will shift just like it normally would. When I shift it into any gear, the car just stays there in place.

Ok, didn't know that model has no dipstick. Have you noticed trans fluid puddling up?
How many miles have you put on the rebuilt trans and how many miles are on the fluid?
I haven't noticed anything leaking from my mustang. I always park it on the same spot on my driveway and nothing is left behind.

I had the transmission replaced last june, and it was a used one. No telling how many miles were on the used one, but I think I've put over 10k on it since then.

I'm getting it towed to a transmission repair shop. I just think that it is weird that I can shift the shifter into any gear like normal, but the car doesn't move into the gear. It idles at 1000 RPMs, and it sounds fine.
