i have 2010 v6 4.0 liter mustang

first off, the display which shows how many miles to empty always changes. for instance, it will say 120 miles to empty when i filled it to half a tank, i will drive 2 miles and the following day it will say 90 miles to empty!!

also, the gas meter ALWAYS fluctuates! it will go back and forth while driving or like for example, it will be at half a tank then i drive less than 10 miles and it will go really close to quarter tank, then the next day it will go to half! its crazy! i drive the car within less than a 10 mile radius and it has less than 30,000 miles. i am not a heavy driver. i bought the car back in june with clean history and all the maintenance records in hand

any suggestions for what is going on or should i just call the dealer and make an appointment to get it checked out??

thanks!

It sounds like the sending unit on the pump is going.

The Computer Reading is horribly inaccurate when driving short distances, have you done calculations by hand?

I for example a Benz in my family states 2-3times the fuel consumption when warming um or on short trips.

Hi crimsontidefan,

My name is Deysha with Ford Service. You should bring it in to your Ford dealer and speak to the Service Manager about this. He is in the best position to look into this for you. If you need further assistance, don’t hesitate to PM me.

Yeah, it sounds like your gas gage is flaky -- needs to be fixed, sounds like a trip to the dealer like Deysha said

To get miles remaining, the computer needs to know:
- how much gas you have -- it gets that from the gas gage
- how much MPG you are getting -- I believe it gets that from the current average MPG in the computer, which comes from miles traveled since last reset and fuel used; I don't know if it gets fuel used from the gas gage or from the fuel pump flow

So if the gas gage is giving flaky readings, you wil get flaky miles remaining also
