"Radar detectors? ....Let me check the history books......Oh Ya, so like in the '80's. Days of the double nickel. May be found next to the cassette tape player in a drawer somewhere." LONGBOY

Using this quote - I was wondering how many people still uses Radar Dectectors:?:

Definitely 80's. But mine does pick up some of those annoying speed-cameras so it's still worth it. Mostly you get false alarms and you end up driving slower overall. Downside is you will NEVER get "just a warning" when you have one.

if there was an option that was "have one - but don't use it often, just for those long trips" i'd vote for that

I operate on the "9 your fine, 10 your mine" philosophy when it comes to speed limits. It has served me well in my 16 years of driving (no speeding tickets, I hope I didn't just jinx it though).

Anything less than 9mph over the speed limit and cops usually don't even flinch (in the midwest at least).

I have thought about those GPS's with the built in tagged speed camera locations... those could be pretty damned useful.

Don't need one. Also use the "9 you're fine...." rule. Rarely drive above 80 in a 70 zone. God knows how many times I've seen others come flying by me when I'm doing 75-80 and a few miles later they're pulled over....

I just drove 1k miles doing 15+ mph over the speed limit almost the entire way without a radar detector. Had one close call with a speed trap, but otherwise it was smooth sailing. I thought about getting a radar detector before I left out, but in the end, I couldn't justify the $500+ expense. If I'm going to spend the money on one, it would be top of the line. Perhaps I'll get one as a christmas present for myself.

BEL GX65 always on the window, its the same as ESCORT 9500ix. Expensive but it never falses, it catches instant on RADAR, GPS is updated weekly for speed cameras, and red light cameras. I got a deal but still spent $400, but has paid for itself already and then some. Don't believe the hype about Valentine 1 detector, they do have long range but they false alarm 20 times a day because they are so sensitive and unfiltered with no GPS database. GX65 or 9500ix!!! if you go cheap you'll have wasted $200 bucks on an electronic noise maker on your dash that won't help you, it'll just annoy the hell out of you.

I have a $100 Cobra unit, but I only use it on longer road trips. Otherwise it's not even in the car.

Wouldn't go anywhere without my V1, hardwired to a spot behind the driver's visor. It's not just the patrolling cops that it helps with, but lately seems like there are tons more speed cameras set up.

I noticed the detectors are popular in the southern US. In canada, you might as well have crystal meth in your car if you get caught. You boys in the south seem to really dislike the law.

Yep we love our freedom and hate socialism! Even though we voted for obamunism a couple years ago, his popularity has been dropping like Chevy stock after it became obama motor company...
Man that's gotta suck up there! I hate living in WA state with all the socialist hippies up here.

Totally Agree! I enjoy my freedom - I served in the US Army as did my father as did my Grandfather in the Navy.....

Less laws and more respect!

I have a cheapie Cobra and one of the more useful features I've found it does is picks up the emergency vehicle emitters to let me know there's an ambulance/fire truck/other emergency vehicle somewhere close by that I might not hear with my stereo on. It lets me get my head on a swivel and see if I need to get out of the way. The same units that trigger the stop lights to turn green for them (and light up the little indicator lights at intersections to show it's working) pick up the same signal.

It won't do you much good if you get lasered (it will give you a MISSILE LOCK!!! warning tone) but it's good to be aware of what's going on when it starts picking up the police type radars/doublers/spoofer/speed cameras ahead.

Overall I like having it.

Western Canada allows their use.

I know you can go to BC w/o a problem.

Also GPS is great for warnings. Up here in Seattle know we have privately contracted "rolling red" cameras where a private company gets paid to mail you citations for technicalities.

(Like not stopping to complete rest at a right turn red light at 3:00 AM when no one else is around. If they do not see your car fall back on it's rear tires signifying complete rest, you get a citation.)

The split the cash with the government.
