program a new key

I only got one key with my '02 Mustang. This morning I locked the key in the car with the engine running for the second time. It's time to get another key. I checked with the dealer and it's going to be over $70 to get a new key and get it programed.

Here is the question. How do they program the key? Is this something that anyone can do if they follow the right instructions, or do you have to have special equipment to do it? I have seen instructions where you put in the key that you have and turn it on, then remove that key and insert the new key and turn it on within 15 second and it will program the new key. Is this just something that someone made up or does it actually work?

I did a search and didn't get a complete answer for what I was looking for. If any Ford mechanics can explain how it's done I'd appreciate it.

You have to have a Ford scan tool to enable programing of another key.

Sorry dude. The FOB can be programed without a scan tool, but not the key itself.
OK, thanks for the reply. I got a new key today but didn't get it programed. I'll take it in sometime and spend the $48 to get it programed. I'm going to get another fob for it too. At least for now I can get the door open if I lock the keys in it again. :)
FWIIW, for the 99+ model year, the end user CAN program their own 3rd key IF they have two working keys.

When 1 or no working keys, then special equipment is needed.

FWWI2, the 96-07 Model year can be programmed by the end user. The procedure takes 45 minutes to perform.
double post. Sorry.
Thanks for the reply. I wish I had a second key to use. Looks like I'm going to be paying for this.

I would be curious to see how this works.

I thought programming had to be initiated with the SPARE_KY PID enabled for it to work?

I see there's a typo in one of my posts. The Model years that supports an end user key re-program are 1996-1997 (not 07). I have posted the procedure several times.

Times like this, i wish we could edit our own posts.
Oh, ok.

You can PM a mod to fix old posts, thats what I did with my Windstar swap post when the links were not working.
