Hi,
I am getting ready to give my 66 coupe a new exhaust system. I was curious if anyone has used the Pypes System #SFM03 (they are 2.5 inch pipes). My car has the Gt Valance, does anyone know who much modification is needed to make these work, and what exhaust tips did you use? The system is ebay item number 260535618583

Thanks so much!

I have not installed the Pypes System however, I have converted my 65 FB over to dual GT exhaust going through the GT valance. Although my current GT system was professionally installed, I have previously installed aftermarket systems. Here are a few things to be aware of.

The stock system on these cars was originally around 2". The Pypes system comes with an "X" pipe where the stock systems had an "H" pipe setup. I installed my "H" pipe far enough back so I could drop the trans if I had to. I would hate to have to pull the engine to service the trans. So I would ask the seller that question.

If you are installing this system yourself, the one piece tail pipe could make things difficult since you would really have to jack the rear end of the car up pretty high to get it over the axle.

The system you are looking at appears to be designed for the early Mustangs but is not a GT specific system. The biggest problem encountered was getting the tail pipes centered so the trumpets would be centered in the holes. There is not as much room to work with as you think. Especially if you're going with 2.5" exhaust. BTW, I'm not sure you can even get trumpets with 2.5" exhaust. You may need a muffler shop to help you modify the bend in the tail pipe to get it to work.

Also, take a look at your rear flexible brake line hose. You may have to move it to keep it away from the exhaust.

These are just a few things I encountered. Hope this helps. Good Luck. :winks

I couldn't find a good set up either. I went with a reputable local shop that has a good history with classic cars such as Mustangs. They built my system from scratch and it took around 6 hours to do it. It's not stainless but the bends are correct and my pipes are perfectly centered through the valance. They sound great and no rattling. Out the door was $700. To me, it was worth the extra $$ to have it done by people that are much more capable then me. My $ .02. Good Luck :bigthumbsup

I'm trying to restore my 65 FB as close to stock as possible. It's an "A" code 4-speed car and the motor is bone stock with no mods. It works for me. For this reason, I went with a pretty simple but effective exhaust.

I'm running stock exhaust manifolds. I went with 2" pipe so I have no clearance issues. I went with the "H" pipe set up moved back far enough that I can access the trans. To me, the H-pipe gives a deeper sound while the X-pipe is raspy and louder. Many people feel you get better performance out of the X-pipe. The draw back for me was the loud drone sound when cruising at highway speeds. The H-pipe was definetly quieter. I also used "Thrush" turbo mufflers. Thrush has come a long way since the loud and tinny sound back in the day. I think the brand of muffler you use is personal taste. I went with a "Turbo" type muffler again for the sound. It gives me a lower, quieter sound but still gives me performance.

By far, the most difficult part of this install was the tail pipes. It took almost 2 hours to get them right so the pipe was perfectly centered when we installed the exhaust trumpets. Installing the trumpets took a while as well. Patience is the key. I used a reputable exhaust shop that has lots of experience with classic cars. They wanted to get things right as much as I did. The result was worth it to me.

Here are some pics that may be of use to you. The last pic is another tail pipe treatment that IMO looked really good. It was neat, clean, and enhanced the look of the car. Good Luck :winks

Well,
I contacted technical support at Pypes, and they told me that their kit will work perfect with the GT Valance. He said the only thing I would need to do is trim the end pipes about 3 inches and put on tip extenders. I think I will take a photo of the kit to a local shop and get their opinion in person.
