Question about air filters and intakes

923 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  kscoyote
yesterday i went to an autoparts store by my house and they had a k & n air filter for my 98 v6 for 45 bucks... i was going to buy it but i was thinking of doing a cold air intake for the car..... i also hear that these "drop-in filters" are just as good as a CAI..... I want an increase in HP and fuel efficiency.... please let me know the good and bad of each,,, and if there are better filters/CAI........
also, anyone know where to get an owners manual for my car for a good price?

on a 98, you won't gain anything over a drop in. At most you'll get 7 hp with a CAI, you already get 5-6 with a K&N drop in.

If you like the eye candy, get a CAI, but they won't do anything unless and until you get the intake ported.

you'll pick up a few mpg with either, but you'll lose mpg on cold days with a CAI.

Re: owners manual - ebay or the dealership. You might be able to find one at a salvage yard . ..
well if i port .... how much would i gain on a CAI vs a drop in......

what is involved in this "porting" (forgive me i'm new to this... i drove a buick lesabre before my mustang)
where can i get a port job done... how much is it going to cost etc etc
any and info will help and is greatly appreciated!
also kys i'm looking into those underdrive pulleys from previous responses u gave to other posts of mine.... which one of those do u recommend?
thanks again

no, they won't, they're a ripoff.

Think of it this way, what do you need for combustion? air, fuel, spark.

Do those increase the amount of air, in any way? No. the system is the same before and after the spacer. there is no benefit. Any "spin" on the air would disappate as soon as it hit the plenum.

Now a plenum spacer would increase the volume of air in the plenum, -which WOULD give you more power.

it's removing restrictive material, to allow more air to flow to or from the combustion chamber.

you "may" gain 1-2 hp over a drop-in filter, nothing you would be able to feel or time.

The pretty pulleys come from ASP, they're all basically the same, the difference is in the finishing.

For porting contact moranav6racing.com, supersixmotorsports.com, rpm-mustangs.com, or a local machine shop.
