Chris, I'll need to do some checking around. The shop that I had my 4.86's put in was own by a good friend, but if he didn't do the work himself, it wasn't done right and we parted ways several years ago. I can tell you that $600 is close to the going rate for installing gear sets in "high performance" cars. In fact, the rate is doubled for just installing an alternator on a high performance vehicle. You may try Matthew's Automotive here in Longmont to get a baseline price. Again, I had a falling out with them, because the price for installing my nitrous system went from $1200 to $4800 for just labor, and because of that I decided to go back to doing my own work. Since I've finally completed my MBA, I'll get the installation completed in the next two weeks; my cost $150, and I'm considering opening my own shop.
Another possible shop is John's 4x4 in Boulder. The shop is hard to find, but the last time I checked two of the mechanics were certified NHRA tech inspectors. Most of the shop's revenue is based on repeat business, and I believe them to be a very reputable shop that does good quality work. I would be very surprise if they didn't remember my 88 stang.
