Questions for those who ordered their mustang...

1511 Views 18 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  1200custom
What should I expect if I have to order the mustang I want, and wait for it to be built at the factory?

Basically I want to know how much of the transaction is complete prior to the car arriving 6-8 weeks later. Do I get to inspect and drive the car before signing the final agreement, or is that already done before they even order it?

If the car arrives, but is different than the one I want, can I back out completely, or am I bound contractually somehow to work with them since they ordered it for me?

I've never ordered one before and am a little nervous negotiating numbers on a car that doesn't even exist yet. I'd appreciate any advice anyone has.

Thanks in advance!

I had to give a $500 deposit, but nothing was in writing accept I agreed and signed the order sheet and I was given a copy to make sure the order was correct. I don't think any of that would be binding if you needed to back out.
They probably will require a down payment or plan pin number (X,A etc. for example) when you order it.

If it's not what you ordered when it arrives, you are not under any obligation to buy it, but if you change your mind after it arrives because you just don't like it, I think you will be out of your deposit depending on the dealer.

i bought mine online from the ford website(internet is so cool...porn,cars,clothes,games) and got a printout of the car and price and their credit approval to take to the dealer...so being as i built the car online...it had to be exactly as i ordered and it was...i told them if anything was different i wouldnt take it and they agreed...i even ordered it with the stripes and the chrome grille so the stripes and grille are on my original invoice

We ordered an F150 9 years ago and our 05 Stang last April. Neither time did we put any money down. Both times our salesman asked us to check the order sheet carefully for mistakes. We were not bound to buy when delivered, I don't know what the "rules" are, but salesman said if we backed out he would have no problem selling the vehicles. We were told no one would be able to test drive the vehicles after they arrived because they were "ours"-I worried that I would not know the car was in and see it going down the road and contol freak that I am,I wanted to drive them first! We inspected and drove both before we signed anything. Good luck! You do know about Kzinti don't you?
Similar to Bigplayrayr, I paid $1000 deposit. No paper work until the car arrived. I only gave the X-plan pin then as well. This is the second car I've ordered in the last ten years and no problems on either occasion. You should also have only 3-4 miles on the odo.
This was also the first vehicle I've ever ordered to my specs. I went in with the x-plan pin # and just told them what I wanted. Also had my loan pre-approved and all the paperwork with me. Had to pay $200 down and I would've been out that if I hadn't taken the car (but also could have put that toward another car if I decided I liked one on their lot better than the one I ordered). I received the DORA before I left and was able to track it, also. They called me when the car arrived. Unfortunately for me, I didn't realize the dealership used an outside vendor to apply the stripes. They were supposed to hold it for me to look at prior to the stripes going on, but the guy arrived to pick it up (AND DRIVE IT) before I got there. I was NOT happy about that, so be sure you know all that info up front! Anyway, it was prepped before the 'stripe guy' took it (salesman said this is a safety issue when someone else is taking it off the lot - they'd be liable if anything happened). Anyway, I've seen a post from another guy on here that specifically asked for NO prep.

Same as everybody else had already said, I gave a $500.00 deposit and signed the order sheet, that's all. I did it in August, so they did not even know the final price yet! Can't believe that the price dropped almost $500 from the initial quote. When I got there to pick it up, my new Mustang was sitting off to the side of the building in the delivery area, and only had 7 miles on it. Keep in mind that the dealer will have to do a pre-delivery inspections and detail before you get it, so it will have a few miles on it. Last thing you want is to drive down the road and have the lug nuts fall off. I used to work ata dealer, and you would be surprised how many new cars have missing/lose hose clamps and lug nuts.
no money down on mine. did have x-plan though, dont know if that makes a difference. my salesman told me he could care less if i picked her up or not. with the options i ordered he said he would have it sold in less than 2 days after parking it on the showroom floor....

in fact, when it came in (4 days earlier than the order line said):happyhapp he called and asked me if i still wanted it, if not, he had a buyer! :eyebulge:
Wow, thanks for the replies everyone, some very helpful info here. I think I'm going to take a little tougher stance with my salesman from now on and tell them I won't be signing anything or discussing any numbers until the car arrives. So far they've been telling me that I couldn't do it that way.

The only thing I'm worried about is not being able to agree on a final price with the dealership once the car arrives and then losing my deposit. I guess I'll just have to try to find a place that won't require a deposit at all. :)

Nope. What exactly is Kzinti?

He's a ford employee over on blueoval.com that will track your order once you have a vin. He provided me all of the details in my sig and a pdf of my window sticker before I even got the car.

Awesome guy!

Kzinti is a Ford employee. Go to blue oval forums, employee section. He can help you track your car once you order it. Blend date, production date, etc. Seems like a nice guy and is very helpful to Mustang fanatics!
Another thing that is cool about ordering is that my name was printed on the window sticker.
You might want to consider the quaterhose association membership. I think you have to be a 60 day member to get the 500 dollar rebate at the time of actually purchasing the car. My sales guy told me about it and I was able to get the rebate. Here is the link.

you only get your name on window sticker if you order at 'plan'...I was bummed.

BTW- as long as you put SOMETHING down(I only had to put 100 down)they order with your name on DORA, so no issues with car going elsewhere. just find a dealer you trust, set out the price(expect tax/title bs fees added at time of delivery- be sure to ask!) put a deposit, next day they should have you a DORA to confirm what you want- if alls well, sit and wait, and wait, and wait...
First off , find a dealer you can trust. There were alot of stories out there of dealers taking deposits just to get orders in for the Mustangs above their allotments. Once the cars came in they would raise the price or sell from under the person who ordered it. The internet way sounds pretty cool, just be sure what options and colors you want are correct. I went to a small dealer who mostly sells trucks to order my 05 GT. When I ordered mine there were horror stories of people waiting months & months to get their Mustangs. I got lucky, from order date to delivery was just over 8 weeks. Better yet my GT has a build date of April 17,2005. April 17th 1964 is when the 1st Mustang hit the road. Pretty cool.. They required a $500.deposit and confirmed my order sheet and it was off to be built. They called me when it got scheduled for build, then called again on the build date, then again on the ship date and est. delivery date. They even went so far as to call me when the transport truck came in so I could see it unloaded. Once it was prepped and parked waiting for me they got 3 more offers on it and one guy even came to my work to try to buy it from me. All in all it drives you crazy waiting for it to arrive, but boy what a trip when it does. You turn 16 again. Its worth the wait.... Good Luck and Enjoy..

I ordered mine from a dealer for it to arrive. Got a better price, and almost got what I ordered. They had a new employee accidently modify the wrong order, mine, and deleted the IUP.

Now that I have had the car a while, I am glad that they did. I had the IUP dash installed, and do not miss the aluminum pieces that would have gone with it.
I ordered mine with just a handshake no money down. I got exactly what I ordered, they knocked 300 bucks off the sticker. I was worried about no money down, but the dealer said they could sell easily the car if I backed out
