ok i have the engine bolted in at the moment, now the transmission is about 2 inches too far forward to bolt the shifter in, so i'll have to cut the hole a bit, this is normal right?

Nope?

I guess if it was normal, there would already be a cut-out spot there.
I am not sure what year you are looking at, or what type transmission. Is this some kind of swap or conversion?
Did you put the crossmember or motor mounts in backwards? (it is easy to flip the mounts around.
Your transmission crossmember should have oblong mounting holes that allow for some adjustment.

Nicke, I put in a Hurst shifter for my C4 and it fit right in the hole that the original floor shifter was in. I did have to drill a hole for the cable since the original shifter didn't have a cable. As Cobra6 said, I think we need more information about what you are trying to do. If its a conversion, you may have to open the hole a little.
