My right rear break squeaks unless I'm on the brakes. It's not a constant squeak its a "squeak squeak squeak squeak" type of squeak. If that makes sense... It speeds up with vehicle speed and slows when I slow down without touching the brakes. I'm going to take the wheel off and look around but before I do that I wanted to get some ideas of what to look for. Also, my ABS light is on (in turn not allowing my trac. control to work...which I would turn off anyways but its kind of annoying). I will be going to my mechanic today to see if he can bull the ABS code for me.

Also, from what I can tell the brakes are fine. Pads look good (without taking the wheels off) and brake fluid isn't low. I've had no problems with stopping.

the pads are probably worn or have a buildup of dust, the ABS light could be a low brake fluid situation or one of the sensors has died...

fluid is level. Going to take it in for a break inspection once I can afford it anyways. Just tired of the squeaking.

I have the same sqeaking problem with my '97 Cobra.
Check the quality of your brake fluid, and possibly it may be that the caliper isn't openning completely. I haven't checked mine yet , still in storage.

RoCobra ya it might be something with the caliper. I smelled burning break scent coming from the wheel the other day. My Wrangler had the same problem except the caliper completely locked up (just the one). I ended up bleeding/flushing the breaks on the Jeep and it fixed the problem. I will be trying this on my Cobra within the next few weeks. I recently got it so I don't know what fluids/parts have been put in it. I'm in the process of putting all Motorcraft brand back in it (aside from the Gates belt that comes with the 3 year warrenty):bigthumbsup

I had this happen to me. My rear caliper froze up. Ate the pad/rotor etc. I bought the reman-ed units from Latemodel. But if the pads/rotors are fine, I would start by simply bleeding the brake fluids and seeing if that helps.

TwoStangTony thanks for the advice. Its not my DD so I haven't really spent much time on it. I will be getting my brakes inspected and cleaned and will probably have them flushed at the same time with Motorcraft fluid so I know it's the proper fluid.

Try not using your hand brake for a few days and listen if the squeaking stops.

RoCobra I'll give that a try. Usually I don't like resting the car on the transmission but I'll just pay closer attention to parking on flat areas for a week or so and see if it does anything. If it goes away I know its my E brake mechanism. I don't know why I didn't think about trying that haha

so the hand break thing didn't do anything. also when i'm rolling and i pull the ebrake the squeaking persists. so the only time it goes away is when i apply the breaks. now when i rest my foot on the pedal it just gets quieter but is still there. i actually have push on the pedal like i'm stopping to get it to stop.
