Well, it really wasn't a real race, but kinda...
My buddy with the Magnum had his car in the shop and needed a ride during lunch to pick it up. So naturally, I obliged. Anyway, on the way back (on a rural divided highway with sporadic traffic) we decided to give it a go. We waited for a clearing in the traffic and slowed to around 40 mph. I looked over at him and he gave me the signal to go when I was ready... So I downshifted to third, and off I went. I was paying attention to the road, so I didn't see much for a while as I expected for him to be right by my side. I see that I'm coming up on some traffic pretty quick, and I decide to shut it off just after I shift into fifth (at around 110 mph to 120 mph or so), and I catch a glimpse of his angry black beauty IN MY REARVIEW/ SIDEVIEW MIRRORS... And boy was he coming fast! He passes me doing at least 130. Anyway, I'm not sure if he woulda beat me had I kept going, but I do know that I beat him shifting from 3rd thru 5th. But I had the benefit being of the first to step on it, so I guess it wasn't all that fair. But we'll have a "fair" race or two in the future, and I'll keep you posted on the results.

He had a better view of the encounter, but I'd say I must have pulled about 5 car lengths on him before I slowed. But even if Ida kept on it, he mighta passed me. I don't know. It was fun, though.:laughlitt

Good buddy - you got me on that one little run. I signalled you to take off, and I wasn't ready. It was all good though. I can't wait until you get the little computer thingy to make some real measurements.

bmartin, that's one sweet ride. i can't wait to run into one of you 6.1L boys :laughlitt
Thanks! Warcat's Cobra ain't too shabby either. If DC sees fit to put the 6.1L or 6.4L in the new Challenger, then I might consider trading this sled in.

I was gunna say how could you not be ready, it's not like you have to downshift in your SRT. They are all auto's right?

PS - How does it ride? I've been wondering how it handles. Also, how is the engine roar in the cabin?

We had already slowed, and he had already downshifted in anticipation of the start. I looked over at him, signalled to take off, and BLAM! - he was gone! No horn beeps, no 2-3 seconds for me to turn back forward, nothing!

Mine is 5-spd manu-matic. This is true of ALL LX's (Charger, Magnum, 300). Although the tranny program is much improved over lesser Magnums, it still often takes a split second to provide a lower gear. It is fully electronic and "learns" your driving style. Therefore, if you normally run it hard all the time, then it will always be ready to respond. However, I am relatively passive most of the time, so it hesitates to give me lower gears.

The ride in an RT is smooth, quiet, and a bit numb. The SRT8's suspension is much more taught. Combine this with low profile rubber, and you feel much more. Thankfully, the SRT8 seats are a huge improvement, and the cabin is still quiet - even at WOT. I just got back from San Antonio (170 miles one-way), and I was able to comfortably set the cruise at 100mph. Of course, my Escort X50 gave me some needed back-up!

The car is large at over 4300#, so don't expect Mustang levels of handling prowess. However, Motor Trend was able to do the standard 600-ft slalom at 67.1mph in the SRT8. Compare this to 66.1mph for the '05 Mustang GT. Not too bad... :winks

Hah -- they are nice riding cars though.

A buddy of mine has a dark red one with the license plate of 'meat'. People continually think he is a **** and speak about how he rides meat.. go figure.
