Driving home from work today I heard a very very loud bang noise. I think it came from my car. At first I checked my rear window to see if it was cracked but it was not. Drove home and did a thorough visual inspection around the car and under hood and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I have to assume this was a backfire. Should I be concerned? Is there anything I should check? It is a 2014 g t manual with around 12500 miles. Completely stock. I use 93 octane fuel. Just wondering if there could be something wrong or if this may have just been a one time thing. I could be wrong, but I am assuming a backfire. Man was it loud!!!!!

Is it possible that you ran over a large rock or tree branch or something?

Hey Rogan,

I don't think you have anything to worry about!

You most likely had something kicked up underneath your car and it hit something before safely passing through.

If your car is running fine and you see no visible damage, you should be completely fine!

In regards to a backfire, through stock exhaust, a backfire (if one were to occur) would not be a loud bang, so I do not think that is the case.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions.

Did you check your undercarriage? Maybe you ran over a flat chunk of metal or something that kicked up. If it hit any metal components under your car, then it would've been super loud. Probably hit your muffler would be my guess. If your car looks and feels fine, don't sweat it. It will make you nervous and you may be driving all worried and such.

Thank you all for the kind feedback. I greatly appreciate it. It was the second loudest sound I have ever heard in a car. The first was when I had a 1993 jeep parked in a garage at work. When leaving, I turned the key to start it and the battery exploded. This came close. Just on the chance it was a backfire, is it usually a one time thing or can it be a symptom of a problem. I read that it can be caused by unburned gas getting into the exhaust... Thank you all again for the help as always!

I've been driving behind or next to another car that backfired and could feel it in the floor of my car. I thought my car had done it until I saw the other car in front of me do it again.

Hoping that is what happened. Hasn't happened again but I will surely update here and go to the dealer to have it checked if it does.

Thanks again for all the very kind responses!

I had a 79 F150 inline 6 if I remember correctly and I was able to rev it up and make it backfire. (Yes I was young and stupid at the time) It was so loud that my friend and I got pulled over by the police because somebody said I was shooting a gun at them.

Could have been a plastic bag, being caught under a wheel... if the air inside the bag was trapped, in that brief instant, could have burst with a loud bang... happened to me while driving my truck, it was loud enough that I checked the underneath when I got home..... somehow I remembered driving over the bag, and put 2 and 2 together!

Good thing you weren't here in Cobb County, GA or they would've found a gun in your truck, even if you didn't own one.

Hey Rogan,

In the case it was a backfire, a one time occurrence is nothing to worry about.

With such a new car (especially one with stock exhaust) I am still not inclined to say that it was one, but anything is possible!

Regardless, I don't think you should sweat anything!

On a better note, let's see some pictures of your Stang'!

This is very interesting/funny : ) Living in south Florida, there was a very aggressive driver behind me getting off I95 at the time. My actual first thought was that they had shot my car. Believe it or not, I actually fully expected to find a bullet hole somewhere. It is what I told my wife when she asked me why I was looking around the car when I pulled up to my house. The backfire theory was then my second guess!!!

Thanks again for all the input and reassurance.

Slightly scary, yet delivered with a nice touch of humor.

My vote is that you ran over road debris with one of the tires...

I recently traded off my 2010 v6. But the last trip the wife and I took to Chicago, when we were returning, we heard the loudest most ugly sound ever. Seems when we passed under a bridge a chunk of ice let loose and hit the roof of the car. I was driving at least 75mph. It sounded like it tore the roof right off the car. Scared the heck out of us. I stopped and the next rest area and expected to see a large amount of damage. Found nothing, was more shocked by the lack of damage. You never know... could have been anything that caused your noise.

Thanks for your input adspru. Haven't had it occur again so far which is good. The noise was just so darn loud though... sounded like an explosion and there was a bit of a smell afterwords. As some have said - maybe/hopefully it was another car next to me.

btw - based on the picture of your car in your signature, I think I prefer possible S. Fla bullets (and hurricanes) to that snow : ) Can't imagine what that must be like - hope you get a break soon! All the Best.

Thanks replacement - that does sound scary! Glad all was OK. In this case, definitely not snow - been in the 80s for the last 2 weeks : ) Really appreciated your response and experience.

plus1..gif on what replacement said... I hit a chunk that flew off of the top of a semi trailer I was "drafting:nono:".. Sounded like a bomb, but no damage:)

Florida had a taste of winter this year as well... My dad sent me this pic of the car he drove to the "cars on 5th" show in Naples.... Called him out for wearing a coat:heha:

One of the blue hairs he associates with down there had 4 cars entered in the show, the others were an 06 Ford GT, another newer Ferrari, and a White Porsche Carrara that took home the overall "Best in Show"...

Oh... One time I did have to straddle a dead deer... I was in my old integra, the entire car lifted up off of the ground, the bang wasn't as loud as the snow snowman.gifball, but I did have chunks of flesh stuck in the flex joints of the exhaust that began to burn immediately, and what didn't burn started rotting... Both very unique odors. The burning smell went away quickly, the rotting flesh required time... In the driveway, not the garage. That smell eventually went away after I drive through flooded roadways in Amish Countryfacepalm2.gif..... There was never a better time to buy a new a car.
